Pinkerton: The Once And Future Fulton Sheen

Please read this very revealing and informative article on Archbishop Fulton Sheen!

From breitbart.com, and written by James P. Pinkerton 21 Feb 2026: Pinkerton: The Once and Future Fulton Sheen

"The British author T.H. White’s classic tales of King Arthur were collected as The Once and Future King, befitting Arthur’s legendary status as a warrior for good.  We can say the same of the American archbishop, Fulton J. Sheen (1895-1979).  Today, when we are reminded that civilization is worth fighting for—and must be fought for—Sheen resonates.

In the middle of the last century, Sheen was America’s most prominent Catholic cleric.  On radio, in his syndicated column, on prime-time TV—he went head-to-head with Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra, garnering 30 million viewers—and in countless sermons and speeches, Sheen was everywhere; in 1956, Gallup rated him as the third-most admired American.

And yet even though Sheen has been gone for nearly half a century, his admirers still remember.  As Breitbart News reports, he is about to be formally beatified by the Catholic Church.  That is, recognized as blessed, one step away from being canonized, sainted.  Miracles in his name will be evaluated by the Vatican’s Dicastery of the Causes of the Saints, and if the verdict is favorable, Sheen will join the company of the saints.

Yet even non-Catholics should find Sheen compelling, because he played such an important role in forming, and strengthening, American resolve during the Cold War.  That is, the long twilight struggle, from the 1940s to the 1990s, between the Free World and the stormtroopers of Soviet communism—which Ronald Reagan rightfully called the “evil empire.”

The good guys won that struggle, of course, and yet as Reagan also said, “there are no final victories.”

Indeed, today it seems that we’re on the edge of “Cold War 2,” albeit not against Moscow, but against fifth columnists within.  Some of these are operating under the cloak of “democratic socialism,” although nobody should be fooled.  In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani is poised to unleash anarchy, and from that chaos, he and his cadres plan on seizing private property, consolidating their “collectivist” power.

In his life, Sheen saw all that happen, and worse.  As early as 1936, when Stalin’s agents sought to take over Spain, Sheen published a tutorial that reads in part:

Q: Who was the first one in the history of Christianity to use the tactics of the United Front?  [the pro-Soviet political bloc]
A: Judas, by betraying our Lord with a kiss.

That was the essential Sheen: his Christian faith informing calls to action. He was, for sure, a full-spectrum Catholic, endorsing the centrist teachings of that apostle of gradual reform, Leo XIII

Yet Sheen was more articulate that most; he earned his national podium thanks to his rich voice, strong message, wide vocabulary, and good looks.

Sheen used his gifts to make vital points.  In his 2001 biography, America’s Bishop: The Life and Times of Fulton J. Sheen, Thomas C. Reeves writes:

Frequently outspoken, Sheen stirred controversy with forceful statements on such topics as communism, socialism, the Spanish Civil War, World War II diplomacy, psychiatry, secularism, education, and the Left in general.

Sheen was unafraid to state his arguments in, well, religious terms; he scorned the liberalism of the National Council of Churches.  As Sheen put it, “Satan’s last assault was an effort to make religion worldly.”  Today, of course, the National Council of Churches has gone from worldly to woke.

For sure, all of Sheen’s talents were needed to confront the greatest crisis of his era.  According to the scholarly Black Book of Communism, in the 20th century, red totalitarians killed some 100 million people, and blighting the lives of billions more, from Russia to China, from Cambodia to Cuba.

In Eastern Europe, the Catholic Church was a bulwark against atheistic Bolshevism, and so its priests, and laity, suffered greatly.  In Poland, to name just one captive nation, the communist regime executed or imprisoned thousands of believers

So it’s fitting, even poetic, that beginning in the late 1970s, a Polish pope, John Paul II, and Gdansk dock workers, led by Lech Walesa, were at the forefront of the struggle for freedom, including, of course, freedom of worship.  That struggle paid off in 1989; today, Poland prospers.

As a legionary of Christ, Sheen was a heroic soldier in this success, and yet trendy history has sought to blot him out.  According to biographer Reeves, “The celebration of religious certainty that characterized Sheen…has no doubt been responsible in part for the bishop’s neglect at the hands of more recent historians and journalists.”  Yes, to the secular mind, Sheen’s Catholic views—apolitical on ordinary partisan matters, and yet resolutely anti-communist—simply do not compute.

Sheen’s ways were definitely not secular.  He called the Soviet Union “the most anti-Christ nation on the face of the earth,” observing that the Kremlin’s central shrine was “a rotted corpse, the body of Lenin—a perfect symbol of that to which all communism must lead us all, unto dust, unto dissolution, unto death.”

That’s all true, of course, and in the early 1950s, when the U.S. was hot-war fighting communism in Korea, Sheen was a frequent keynoter at American Legion conventions and other patriotic assemblies.

Yet Reeves nailed it when he wrote, “Sheen’s staunch anti-communism undoubtedly also contributes to his lack of appeal for many modern intellectuals.”

You see, over the last few decades, the liberal chattering class has embraced a newer idea, anti-anti-communism. That is, it wasn’t the communists who were bad—they were just liberals in a hurry.  In the progressive version of events, the anti-communists were the nogoodniks.

By contrast, Sheen always told the truth: communism was a “diabolical system.”  And yet Sheen’s powers of perception transcended the fury of the moment.  At a 1949 rally—with the vice president of the United States, as well as the mayor and the archbishop of New York City in the audience—Sheen declared that Marxism “is not the promise of a new era. It is the dying gasp of an old age. It is made up of all the cheap agnostic, atheistic philosophies of the 18th and 19th centuries.”

We can see: Sheen anticipated the optimism of John Paul, Reagan, and Walesa—communism, Moscow-style, could be overcome.

Yet now, in the 21st century, even as the blessed memory of Sheen awaits his rendezvous with the Dicastery, the dread of communism should inspire us to pray for new Sheens, as well as other anti-communist avatars—of the cloth, in uniform, in the media, wherever they are needed.

To be sure, communism is a little bit different today.  Its tentacles include other isms: woke-ism, anti-semitism, and omnicause third-worldism.  Their commonality is hostility to tradition, faith, and humanity itself.  And so we can’t be fooled: the stakes are as high today as they were during Sheen’s life.   (My emphasis.)

One new leader is Bishop Robert Barron of Rochester, Minnesota; he is taking the fight to AOC and others on the hard left.  As conservative Chad Pecknold says, “Among American Catholic bishops, one has to go back to Fulton Sheen to find such an articulate condemnation of Marxist materialism.  It’s refreshing.”

...

So in this coming showdown, we need the whole of courageous good on our side, including inspirations from the past to light our path."

End of article...

My comment: "Their commonality is hostility to tradition, faith..."

Isn't that what we see from the majority of the novus ordo, synodal hierarchy, cancelling traditional Latin Masses all over the place, installing diabolically evil "bishops" to important offices in the "new synodal church"?  Not to mention their connection with the treasonous Leftist politicians in the Demonrat Party?

This Is Big! Indigenous Tribe Admits Search Has Found No Graves Or Bodies At Former Residential Schools!!

A massive lie, and anti-Catholic reporting has been exposed by tribal investigations that lasted over four years, has found no evidence of graves or bodies at former residential schools run by nuns and priests from the late 19th century until about 1996...

Yet -- the now-deceased Bergoglio -- jumped right on the band wagon and threw the Catholic Church under the bus by apologizing for the "horror" believing the false reports of abused and dead children and the "massive graves," without any evidence at the time.

That was another act at treason by Bergoglio, but that was only one of the many acts of treason perpetrated against the Bride of Christ by its supposed head!

But that led to the attacks, vandalism, and burning of over 120 Catholic churches since 2021!!

The following article from lifesitenews.com, and written by Anthony Murdoch Fri Feb 20, 2026 - 8:41 pm EST: Indigenous tribe admits search has found no graves or bodies at former residential schools - LifeSite, will uncover the truths and lies about the supposed "mass graves"...

"(LifeSiteNews) – A Canadian First Nations quest to find graves of hundreds of children on the site of former residential schools, which sparked massive arson attacks on Catholic churches across Canada, has come up empty, the indigenous tribe admits.

The Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc First Nations near Kamloops, British Columbia, said in a press release that a recent investigation found no graves but only “signatures that resemble burials.”

In its statement, the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc chief said that “some areas were ruled out as burials, while others cannot confidently be ruled out.”

The indigenous tribe had claimed in 2021 that it found graves of 215 children at a former residential school.

Its investigation, which used ground penetrating radar (GPR) LiDAR as well as dog teams and other scanners, cost taxpayers millions, both from provincial and federal money.

The First Nations received around $12.1 million in funding that was supposed to be for “exhumation of remains.” Calls for a real excavation of the anomalies are not likely to happen due to the sensitivity around the site.

The Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc are not giving any interviews to the media “at this time.”

As reported by LifeSiteNews, Canada’s Ministry of Indigenous Relations was reprimanded for breaching an Act of Parliament for sealing records on the yet unproven residential school grave claims and has now been ordered to release records.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, in 2021 and 2022, the mainstream media ran with inflammatory and dubious claims that hundreds of children were buried and disregarded by Catholic priests and nuns who ran some Canadian residential schools. The reality is, after four years, there have been no mass graves discovered at residential schools.

Late last year, as reported by LifeSiteNews, Canadian academic Frances Widdowson, who spoke out against claims there are mass unmarked graves of kids on former Indigenous residential schools, was arrested on a university campus for trespassing. He is fighting back with the help of a top constitutional group.

In 2024, retired Manitoba judge Brian Giesbrecht said Canadians were being “deliberately deceived by their own government” after blasting the former Trudeau government for “actively pursuing” a policy that blames the Catholic Church for the unfounded “deaths and secret burials” of Indigenous children.

Canadian indigenous residential schools, run by the Catholic Church and other Christian groups, were set up by the federal government and were open from the late 19th century until 1996.

While there were indeed some Catholics who committed serious abuses against native children, the unproven “mass graves” narrative has led to widespread anti-Catholic sentiment since 2021."

‘Embarrassing In The Extreme’: Liturgy Scholar Demolishes Cardinal Roche’s Document On Latin Mass!

Give the radical modernists enough rope and they will -- eventually -- hang themselves!

In the meantime, they will twist and distort real Catholic Church doctrines and teachings to fit their own diabolical agenda.

A case in point: ‘Embarrassing in the extreme’: Liturgy scholar demolishes Cardinal Roche’s document on Latin Mass...

From lifesitenews.com, and written by Emily Mangiaracina Thu Feb 19, 2026 - 5:25 pm ES: ‘Embarrassing in the extreme’: Liturgy scholar demolishes Cardinal Roche’s document on Latin Mass - LifeSite, comes this article.

"(LifeSiteNews) — A Benedictine priest and liturgical scholar ripped as “embarrassing,” even “in the extreme,” points made by Cardinal Arthur Roche in his recent document on the liturgy distributed at the extraordinary consistory convened by Pope Leo XIV.

Dom Alcuin Reid, a Benedictine monk, priest, and liturgical scholar, broke down Roche’s document defending Traditionis Custodes and the suppression of the Traditional Latin Mass in an analysis recently published by journalist Diane Montagna. In the missive, which is expected to be discussed by the next consistory in late June, Roche claimed that “we cannot go back” to the Traditional Latin Mass.

Reid called out Roche’s invoking of Quo Primum because it declared that “there ought to be only one rite for celebrating the Mass” as “gravely intellectually dishonest.”

“Trent asked the bishops to correct abuses, not to remake or standardize their rites, and Quo Primum included the explicit provision that rites with more than 200 years of legitimate practice were exempt from the unifying intent of the said bull,” Reid noted.

The priest highlighted Roche’s statement that “the reform of the Liturgy wanted by the Second Vatican Council is not only in full syntony with the true meaning of Tradition,” calling his failure to distinguish between the reform that the Council “wanted” and the actual liturgical rites that followed the Council, “academically embarrassing.”

Reid addressed Roche’s suggestion that the liturgy must be open to “legitimate progress,” which he used to defend his position that the TLM must give way to the Novus Ordo.

“To speak constantly of the liturgy being ‘dynamic’ and ‘progressing’ and ‘changing’ is to risk turning it into a form of religious entertainment for people who, without the necessary formation with which to unlock its riches, will become bored and constantly seek something new, more dynamic and different if we are somehow to retain their attention,” Reid remarked.

The Benedictine scholar had distinguished between “organic development” of the liturgy and “disproportionate positivist intervention,” which he said was “unknown in the history of the Western rite until the 20th century, and reached its zenith after the Second Vatican Council.” In the case of the promulgation of the Novus Ordo, such intervention failed to “respect the integrity of the inherited liturgical tradition.”

Reid then took aim at Roche’s claim that the so-called “liturgical reform” was made on the “basis of accurate theological, historical and pastoral investigation,” calling this “embarrassing in the extreme.”

Reid continued, pointing out that calls for … “accurate theological, historical and pastoral investigation” into the rites “most certainly did not envisage the evisceration of central teachings of Sacred Scripture.”

We must admit that the new liturgy “failed to usher in the new springtime in the life of the Church with which it was ‘marketed,’” he wrote, highlighting the fact that most baptized in the Catholics do not even attend Mass.

This is “due to various causes,” he said, “but the reformed liturgy has not proved to be a successful antidote to them. It does not serve to unite them to God.” In fact, evidence suggests that the changes following Vatican II, the most prominent and tangible of which were the changes to the Mass, were associated with the steep decline in Catholic practice.  Mass attendance and religious vocations plummeted since Vatican II around the world.

In the U.S. in particular, the number of priests flatlined in 1965 after the Second Vatican Council and then began to plummet around 1985 as the Catholic population continued to explode. This suggests significant harm to vocations was inflicted by the changes to the liturgy and teaching of the faith initiated by the Council.

In support of this association, a secular study published in 2025 found that Vatican II “triggered a decline” in worldwide Catholic Mass attendance relative to religious service attendance of other religions, including Protestant Christianity.

This Church crisis lends credence to Reid’s assertion that Roche’s aim of not just promoting the Novus Ordo Missae but suppressing the traditional Latin Mass “does not seek the good of souls today; rather it seeks to protect at all costs the cherished liturgical ideologies of yesterday.”

“In the end, it must be said clearly that this briefing document lacks intellectual honesty and displays a woeful ignorance of liturgical history,” Reid wrote. “Similarly, it lacks the pastoral outreach and generosity one would expect to find, replacing it with a rigidity that clings to a very narrow vision of the Church’s liturgical life and history.”

“That this document bears the name of the Prefect of the Dicastery of Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments renders it nothing less than a scandal,” Reid concluded. “If it is the work of the Prefect himself, he should ‘consider his position,’ as politicians in his native country would say. If it is the work of his staff, he should consider their positions also, whilst himself accepting ultimate responsibility for having distributed it to members of the Sacred College.”

“For this document is certainly not a profound theological, historical, and pastoral inquiry with the aim that sound tradition may be retained, and yet the way remains open to legitimate progress. It is little more than a piece of shallow propaganda and should be set aside as such. The College of Cardinals, indeed the Church – most especially her faithful – deserve far better.”

End of devastating critique!
