ALBA DE TORMES, Spain (LifeSiteNews) — The more than 400-year-old body of St. Teresa of Avila has been discovered to still be incorrupt after being exhumed for the first time since 1914.   

On August 28, researchers opened St. Teresa of Avila’s coffin for the first time in 110 years, to find that her body remains incorrupt, according to Marco Chiesa, the general postulator of the Order of Discalced Carmelites.  

“Today the tomb of Saint Teresa was opened, and we have verified that it is in the same condition as when it was last opened in 1914,” Chiesa stated.   

“The uncovered parts, which are the face and foot, are the same as they were in 1914,” he continued. “There is no color, no skin color, because the skin is mummified, but you can see it, especially in the middle of the face. It looks good. The medical experts, they can almost see Teresa’s face clearly.”

The purpose of exhuming her body was to confirm that it had remained incorrupt since 1914, when her tomb was last opened. The Carmelite nun and Doctor of the Church was first discovered to be incorrupt in 1585, after her death in 1582.  

Since then, her body has remained at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Alba de Tormes in northwestern Spain, except for certain relics that have been sent to other churches for veneration.   

Opening St. Teresa’s coffin is a complicated process, involving 10 keys. Three of the keys are kept in Alba de Tormes, three on loan from the Duke of Alba, and three kept in Rome by the Discalced Carmelite Father General, along with the king’s key. 

The first three keys are used to open the exterior grille, the second three to open the marble sepulcher, and the other four are used to open the silver casket. 

Chiesa explained that the research aims to “check aspects of the saint’s life such as her illnesses and problems, as well as the state of preservation of the body to see how it can be intervened to preserve it for centuries.”  

The process began in August 2022 by the prior of Alba de Tormes and was given approval by the Vatican and Pope Francis. 

He expressed hope to “get to know the saint better, her offering, her last years of life defined by pain.” 

“It has already been detected that she suffered from calcareous spine in her foot which made it impossible for her to walk, but she walked and arrived at Alba de Tormes and her desire was to continue but it was physically difficult,” he revealed.  

The research is expected to take some time and will involve three stages. The first will be to use visual recognition, photographs, and x-rays, then the findings will be examined by Italian laboratories by the team of participating doctors and scientists.  

Finally, the team will likely suggest methods for better preserving the body, before the tomb and will be closed and sealed."

"VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis condemned efforts to regulate immigration, stating that those who “systemically” work to “repel migrants” are committing a “grave sin.”

Leaving aside his series of catechetical addresses, Pope Francis today used his Wednesday audience to address the topic of immigration. “I would like to pause with you to think about the people who – even at this moment – are crossing seas and deserts to reach a land where they can live in peace and safety,” he opened.

‘A grave sin’

Using the themes of “seas and deserts,” Francis stated that both seas and deserts are becoming “cemeteries of migrants.” He added that “the tragedy is that many, the majority of these deaths, could have been prevented.”

Francis has often highlighted the topic of migration from the very earliest days of his pontificate.

Today’s general audience saw him amplify his already strong rhetoric as he condemned anyone who took steps to oppose migration:

It must be said clearly: There are those who work systematically and with every means possible to repel migrants – to repel migrants. And this, when done with awareness and responsibility, is a grave sin.

Elaborating on his description of opposing migration as being a “sin,” Francis drew on Sacred Scripture: “Let us not forget what the Bible tells us: ‘You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him’ (Ex 22:21). The orphan, the widow and the stranger are the quintessential poor whom God always defends and asks to be defended.”

The Pontiff also pointed to a disparity between the wealth of different societies, commenting that “in the time of satellites and drones, there are migrant men, women and children that no one must see: they are hidden. Only God sees them and hears their cry. And this is a cruelty of our civilization.”

Turning to Scripture once again, Francis compared current immigration – a phenomena particularly focused into Europe from Africa and into the U.S. from the southern border – to the “great migration” of the Jewish people who were led by Moses out of slavery in Egypt.

“It will be good for us today: the Lord is with our migrants in the mare nostrum, the Lord is with them, not with those who repel them,” Francis commented.

The Pope did not distinguish between legal and illegal immigration during his audience address, or on the manner in which immigrants should be welcomed and acclimatize to the local culture – an aspect on which the Church has clear teaching. His words appeared to be a general invitation for increased immigration of any kind.

Open borders and Catholic social teaching

Italy has been facing a spiraling migrant crisis for many years due to the mass influx of individuals into the country, chiefly from African Muslim nations. The harbor town of Lampedusa is a popular destination for such migrant boats due to its position in the far south of Italy, and it is increasingly being overrun by Muslim immigrants. It was here that Pope Francis made his first trip outside of Rome in July 2013.

With much of Europe now seeing a marked increase in violence linked to illegal immigration, often by Muslims, Francis has nevertheless continued to issue a call for more immigration rather than less.

Addressing the audience in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday, Francis said that to prevent migrants from suffering in “those lethal deserts” there should be more open borders:

But it is not through more restrictive laws, it is not with the militarization of borders, it is not with rejection that we will obtain this result. Instead, we will obtain it by extending safe and legal access routes for migrants, providing refuge for those who flee from war, violence, persecution and various disasters; we will obtain it by promoting in every way a global governance of migration based on justice, fraternity and solidarity. And by joining forces to combat human trafficking, to stop the criminal traffickers who mercilessly exploit the misery of others.

The Catholic Church’s teaching regarding immigration is a careful mix of charity to the citizens of a nation and those seeking entrance to that nation for just reasons. The Catechism notes that “political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption.”

Furthermore, the Catechism outlines that “immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.”

Such a teaching was expounded upon in 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI in his message for the 97th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. While quoting from Pope John Paul II to defend the “possibility” for people “to enter another country to look for better conditions of life,” Benedict also defended the rights of the home nations to restrict such entries:

At the same time, States have the right to regulate migration flows and to defend their own frontiers, always guaranteeing the respect due to the dignity of each and every human person. Immigrants, moreover, have the duty to integrate into the host Country, respecting its laws and its national identity.

Indeed, prior to this, John Paul II wrote for the same occasion in 2001 that the exercise of the “right to emigrate … is to be regulated, because practicing it indiscriminately may do harm and be detrimental to the common good of the community that receives the migrant.”

Papal praise for Mediterranean project

Concluding his Wednesday audience, Pope Francis praised the “courageous men and women” who “do their utmost to rescue and save injured and abandoned migrants on the routes of desperate hope, in the five continents.”

He included the organization Mediterranea Saving Humans (MSH) among those he described as being “on the front line” in the “fight for civilization.” In recent days, the scandal-encircled organization embarked on another trip to bring illegal immigrants to Italy, and for the first time did so in conjunction with the Italian Catholic bishops’ conference.

Pope Francis sent a handwritten note praising the endeavor.

MSH’s ship “Mare Jonio” has previously been confiscated and fined over disputes with the local authorities regarding their bringing illegal refugees to Italian ports.

Scandal erupted last December when it was reported that controversial activist Luca Casarini – personally invited to the Synod on Synodality by Francis – has had his activity supporting illegal immigration heavily bankrolled by the Italian bishops.

Casarini works with MSH, and the group’s chaplain has been identified as a key link between Italian bishops’ conference president Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and a recent increase in funding from the Italian episcopate."

Beijing recognizes Vatican-appointed bishop ahead of expected renewal of China-Vatican deal - LifeSite (lifesitenews.com)

"TIANJIN, China (LifeSiteNews) — The Holy See announced that the Chinese government has officially recognized a Vatican-appointed bishop of the underground Church, in what appears as a significant moment in Sino-Vatican relations.

On August 27, the Holy See press office issued a statement detailing that Bishop Melchior Shin Hongzhen had been recognized by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) government as ordinary of the Diocese of Tianjin:

The Holy See learns with satisfaction that today, August 27, 2024, H.E. Msgr. Melchior Shi Hongzhen is officially recognized for the purposes of the civil order as Bishop of Tianjin (Municipality of Tianjin, People’s Republic of China).

 The Holy See commented that the development “is a positive fruit of the dialogue established over the years between the Holy See and the Chinese government.”

Bishop Shi, 94, had been appointed by the Vatican as coadjutor bishop of Tianjin in 1982, and succeeded Vatican-approved and fellow “underground” Church Bishop Stephen Li Side, who died in 2019 aged 92. The diocese, however, had been without a bishop since 2005.

Like his predecessor, Bishop Melchior Shi has consistently refused to join the state-approved church in China – the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA) – and has subsequently been under house arrest for a number of years.

Diocese of Tianjin: pivotal see in Sino-Vatican relations

The Diocese of Tianjin has long been a contended one, with the CCP authorities refusing to recognize the Vatican-appointed bishops. While still a priest, Bishop Stephen Li was arrested in 1958 upon the launch of the CPCA. He spent four years in jail before being released. Arrested once again in 1963, he was sent to work camps until 1980.

Bishop Li was then secretly consecrated bishop of the Diocese of Tianjin in 1982, but the CCP refused to recognize him. Imprisoned again in the late 1980s, he was released on house arrest until his death.

In his place, the CCP positioned Bishop Giuseppe Shi Hongchen as leader of Tianjin – a former member of the underground Church who had been consecrated an auxiliary of Tianjin by Bishop Li. Bishop Giuseppe Shi died in 2006.

According to the Holy See, the diocese has “56,000 faithful, distributed in 21 parishes, served by 62 priests and a good number of women religious.” A 2019 report by AsiaNews attested to “100 thousand faithful, cared for by 40 official and 20 underground priests” with a further 60 CPCA priests and sisters.

AsiaNews – a reliable documenter of news pertaining to the Church in the region – previously described the Diocese of Tianjin as “a significant test for the agreement on episcopal appointment.” Such a comment came in light of the much-discussed and highly controversial 2018 deal the Vatican has with Beijing.

The officially secret Sino-Vatican deal is believed to recognize the state-approved church in China and allows the CCP to appoint bishops. The Pope apparently maintains veto power, although in practice it is the CCP that has control, as demonstrated by a series of recent episcopal appointments by the CCP. It also allegedly allows for the removal of legitimate bishops to be replaced by CCP-approved bishops.

In a 2018 letter to Chinese Catholics, Francis described the deal as forming a “new chapter of the Catholic Church in China.”

But outside the walls of the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, criticism has come from Catholic clergy, freedom advocates, and China experts. The highly secretive deal has been styled by Hong Kong emeritus Cardinal Joseph Zen as an “incredible betrayal,” with the much-loved cardinal further accusing the Vatican of “selling out” Chinese Catholics.

Numerous China experts have also criticized the Vatican for the deal, and then-U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned in 2020 that “(t)he Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

“All bishops who refuse to join the Catholic Patriotic Association are being placed under house arrest, or disappeared, by the CCP,” China expert Steven Moser told LifeSiteNews. “Although the Vatican said several years ago that the Sino-Vatican agreement does not require anyone to join this schismatic organization, refusal to do so results in persecution and punishment. And the Vatican stands by and does nothing.”

Tianjin a sign of the deal’s renewal?

In April this year, Vatican Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin confirmed to this correspondent that the Holy See hoped to renew the deal this fall, for the third such renewal.

Prior to the 2022 renewal, the Holy See and CCP authorities held joint discussions in Tianjin in early autumn, and the Vatican delegation also visited Bishop Melchior Shi in his house arrest. The Holy See team was led by Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, an official who was heavily instrumental in orchestrating the original Sino-Vatican deal, alongside Cardinal Parolin.

Various Vatican sources have confided to certain members of the Vatican press corps that relations between Beijing and the Vatican have apparently “made progress.” This, the officials said, was largely due to the current bishop of Hong Kong, Cardinal Stephen Chow, SJ, who has highlighted a spirit of “dialogue” between the two parties.

Notwithstanding such power games, the deal has led to a heightened increase in religious persecution, which the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China described as a direct consequence of the deal. In its 2020 report, the Commission wrote that the persecution witnessed is “of an intensity not seen since the Cultural Revolution.”

"The parents of Thomas Matthew Crooks have hired a high-powered legal firm as the investigation continues into their son’s July 13 attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump.

The firm of Quinn Logue, which is based in Pittsburgh, will represent Matthew Crooks and his wife Mary, according to the Daily Mail.

The firm, founded by some of Pittsburgh’s top attorneys, says it specializes in “criminal defense and civil suits including wrongful death and personal injury.”

The Mail, citing a supposed anonymous family member, reported that as the FBI investigates the shooting, the agency remains uncertain exactly how much the gunman’s parents knew about his plans.

“The FBI still very much has questions about how much they knew and how he [Thomas] slipped through the net,” the source reportedly said.

Prior to the shooting, the parents contacted law enforcement, saying their son had not responded to their attempts to contact him.

Crooks’s parents have made no statement after the shooting, and when confronted by the media have asked to be left alone.

Some Republicans have voiced concerns over the pace of the investigation and the lack of any apparent motive in the shooting, which killed one rallygoer while wounding Trump and two spectators.

“It’s been more than a month since former President Trump’s near-assassination, yet the FBI has still not offered Congress or the public any real insights into Crooks’ motivation,” Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said, according to the New York Post.

“The FBI ought to stop dragging its feet and provide a serious update on their investigation. Every day the FBI, as well as the Secret Service, keep the American people in the dark is another day wasted,” he said.

Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who is part of the Senate panel investigating the assassination attempt, was more blunt.

“All I can really tell you is the Secret Service, FBI are basically dragging their feet. They’re stonewalling us,” Johnson said.

The lack of progress has led Republican Rep. Mike Walz of Florida to question the federal dogma that Crooks acted alone, according to the Daily Mail.

“I don’t understand, and I don’t have any answers yet to help me understand how the [Secret] Service and DHS came out so quickly and said – and I think the FBI as well, but I’ll have to check that – and said, he operated alone,” Waltz said.

“How do you know that mere days into your investigation?”

“You can’t tell us his motive, but you could tell us he operated alone? You can’t get into these encrypted overseas accounts, but you can tell us he acted alone?” he said, referring to accounts found on Crooks’s phone.

“So, I don’t buy that yet.”

I read the entire article... What I didn't see is the word "miracle" used to describe the incorrupt body of the good Sister!

Why?

Why are the modernists afraid to use a word that implies that something supernatural has occurred?

The answer is, of course, quite simple: they -- the modernists -- hate the possibility of a supernatural miracle and the implication of miracles.

The modernists hate the idea of real proof that shatters their disbelief in God almighty Who is able to do and show favoritism to one of His beloved and faithful creatures.

In my opinion, the words of Bishop Johnston are weak and fails to ignite an interest in those non-Catholics or fallen-away Catholics, to the witness of -- saintly -- Sr. Wilhelmina's incorrupt body and the connection to the true religion.

In other words, where else have miracles happened but in the true Catholic Church by the Saints and Martyrs, before and after their deaths?

I have visited the beautiful chapel of the  Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, in Gower, Missouri, at least twice along with my dear wife, Kathy.

We have asked her to intercede for our family and our health...

"GOWER, Missouri (LifeSiteNews) — Bishop James V. Johnston of Kansas City-St. Joseph has released results of experts’ investigations into the apparently incorrupt remains of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster, concluding that her body shows “a lack of any detected features of decomposition.”

On April 28, 2023 the body of Sr. Wilhelmina of the Most Holy Rosary, foundress of the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, was exhumed as the sisters intended to transfer her remains into the abbey church. She had died on May 29, 2019.

Upon being exhumed, Sr. Wilhelmina’s body was discovered to be apparently incorrupt, the current abbess of the community, Mother Cecilia, OSB, told EWTN.

In May last year, an investigation was launched into her remains, at the instigation of Bishop Johnston of the local Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.

The diocesan press release issued August 22 details that:

In the final report, the investigative team noted that the condition of Sister Wilhelmina’s body during the examination was notable for a lack of any detected features of decomposition. The lining of her casket had completely deteriorated, but her habit and clothing showed no features of breakdown.

The report also noted that the related history of Sister Wilhelmina’s death and interment does not describe conditions that would be expected to protect against decomposition.

Conducting the investigation, according to Johnston, were “a team of local medical experts” led by a pathologist and joined by “two other medical doctors and a former Missouri county coroner.”

“In addition to examining and evaluating the mortal remains of the deceased, the team inspected the casket, and interviews were conducted with eyewitnesses to events immediately preceding the burial in 2019 and the exhumation in April 2023,” Johnston announced.

While the investigation was described as being only “limited,” the investigators nevertheless stated that “the condition of her body is highly atypical for the interval of nearly four years since her death, especially given the environmental conditions and the findings in associated objects.”

As previously reported, Sr. Wilhelmina’s burial had not been conducive to preserving her remains. Her body had not been embalmed and upon exhumation it was discovered that the wooden coffin in which she was buried was cracked, allowing dirt and moisture into the coffin.

The convent stated in 2023 that her body was covered “in a layer of mold that had grown due to the high levels of condensation within the cracked coffin,” but despite this damp state, “little of her body and nothing of her habit disintegrated during the four years.”

Additionally, the sisters revealed last year that “not only was her body in a remarkable preserved condition, her crown and bouquet of flowers were dried in place; the profession candle with the ribbon, her crucifix, and rosary were all intact.”

Johnston’s press release noted that tests had been performed on the soil where her remains had been buried, and that “no unusual elements were found which would have impacted the condition of Sister Wilhelmina’s body when it was exhumed.”

“In conclusion,” he stated, “within the limits of what has been observed during this time, the body of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster does not appear to have experienced the decomposition that would have normally been expected under such previous burial conditions.”

What now?

The topic of “an incorruptible” is one on which comparatively little has been written in the Church.

Johnston’s investigation did not directly declare Sr. Wilhelmina to be incorrupt. He further wrote that “the Catholic Church does not have an official protocol for determining if a deceased person’s body is incorrupt, and incorruptibility is not considered to be an indication of sainthood. There is no current plan to initiate a cause for sainthood for Sister Wilhelmina.”

Since the discovery of her remains, thousands of pilgrims have flocked to the Missouri convent to pray in front of the apparently incorrupt nun. The flourishing yet still young community – whose life is centered on the traditional Mass and Divine Office – have reported that physical healings have taken place in connection with Sr. Wilhelmina.

This new found focus on the convent as a place of pilgrimage and prayer was one which Johnston encouraged. “The condition of the remains of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster has understandably generated widespread interest and raised important questions,” he wrote. “I pray that Sister Wilhelmina’s story continues to open hearts to love for Our Lord and Our Lady.”

Although not yet 30 years old, the young community of religious sisters – both in its age and age of its vocations – is over 50-strong, and has now opened two daughter houses, bringing the combined total to over 60 religious. The key to the flourishing order is the traditional Mass, which as the nuns themselves state is “at the heart of our charism.”

In recent months, the sisters have also established a fledgling community in England, accepting an invitation from the Diocese of Birmingham to take over a disused abbey. The former Benedictine house of Colwich Abbey will now be the first international base for the sisters, and a useful location for their growing numbers of international vocations."
