"(LifeSiteNews) — ["]Cardinal["] Blase Cupich denounced “traditionalism” as the “dead faith of the living” in an echo of the Vatican meeting that produced the Latin Mass-suppressing Traditionis Custodes.
The Archbishop of Chicago took aim at the Traditional Latin Mass, codified in 1570 after the Council of Trent, in a Wednesday piece for the Chicago Catholic as the TLM continues to be suppressed around the world due to the dictates of Traditionis Custodes.
Cupich argued that the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy can be “easily read” as a “correction” of liturgical developments made from the seventh to the 18th centuries. According to the cardinal, these Vatican II changes “restor(ed) the liturgy’s original emphasis on active participation by the laity and a noble simplicity.”
“These reforms were a direct response to the centuries of development that erroneously had transformed the Mass from a communal event into a more clerical, complex and dramatic spectacle,” Cupich claimed.
The heterodox cardinal’s allegation that the Mass’ previous centuries of development were “erroneous” is akin to a Protestant view. By claiming the entire Church was worshipping falsely or inappropriately for about 1,300 years, Cupich essentially denies that the Catholic Church remains a divine institution.
As liturgical scholar Dr. Peter Kwasniewski has explained, “The traditional liturgical worship of the Church, her lex orandi (law of prayer),” is a “fundamental” “expression of her lex credendi, (law of belief), one that cannot be contradicted or abolished or heavily rewritten without rejecting the Spirit-led continuity of the Catholic Church as a whole.”
He has pointed out that the longer a tradition is practiced by the Church, the more certain we can be that the tradition is divinely inspired.
Most compellingly, St. Pius V’s 1570 bull Quo Primum permanently authorized the traditional Mass, declaring that it may be used “freely and lawfully” in “perpetuity,” and even that the wrath of God would fall upon those who would dare to restrict or abolish the Traditional Latin Mass, also known as the Tridentine Mass.
Cupich concluded in his article, “Tradition is the living faith of the dead, traditionalism is the dead faith of the living.” He quoted the final assessment of a Vatican plenary session meeting in January 2020 that led to Traditionis Custodes, as reported by Vatican correspondent Diane Montagna.
Traditionis Custodes, which has led to the suppression of dozens of Latin Masses around the world, has been denounced by clergy and scholars as a repudiation of the perennial practice of the Catholic Church and even of solemn Church teaching (ie. Quo Primum).
For example, Cardinal Raymond Burke has affirmed that the traditional liturgy cannot be proscribed even by the pope himself.
