"(LifeSiteNews) — A pro-life pregnancy center is fighting back in federal court against a “smear campaign” by the Massachusetts government, which branded it as a “fake clinic” without producing actual evidence of wrongdoing.
In 2024, Massachusetts under Democrat Gov. Maura Healey launched a million-dollar advertising blitz against pregnancy centers, alleging that they put women’s “health at risk” and “mislead” pregnant women about their “options,” as well as soliciting civil rights complaints for anyone with a “negative experience” to file with the state.
Several pregnancy centers have filed legal action against the state over this baseless targeting, and, on June 2, the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) announced that it is taking the case of one such provider, A Woman’s Concern, Inc., d/b/a Your Options Medical Centers (“YOM”), to the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals.
“Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health since 1999, YOM has maintained a spotless record – zero patient complaints in a quarter century of operation,” ACLJ says. Yet in the face of the state’s hostility, “A physician resigned rather than risk professional repercussions under the state’s threats. YOM turned away patients. Client numbers dropped. And YOM’s medical director has endured a prolonged Board of Registration in Medicine investigation – triggered by a complaint from the state’s own campaign partner – now stretching beyond two years with no finding of wrongdoing.”
On June 9, ACLJ further announced that a major coalition of pro-life organizations is backing the effort by filing their own amicus briefs, including 40 Days for Life, Heartbeat International, Life Legal Defense Foundation, and an additional 30-group coalition assembled by Advancing American Freedom.
“Look closely at that list. Christians and Jews. Men and women. National advocacy groups and state coalitions. Even Democrats for Life is standing alongside conservative organizations. This is what principled unity looks like,” ACLJ says. “Their brief draws on a deep well of precedent – from Brown v. Board of Education to NAACP v. Alabama – to show that a government cannot enlist private allies to accomplish censorship it could never achieve on its own, and that the freedom of association of pregnancy centers and their supporters is squarely at risk. We are humbled and energized by this outpouring of support.”
Pregnancy centers have long provided low-income women with a wide variety of services, including ultrasounds, basic medical care, adoption referrals, parenting classes, and children’s supplies that help mitigate the fears and burdens that lead some to choose abortion. For that reason, they have long been a target of left-wing rage, with attacks often focusing on claims that they deceive women, both about abortion and about their own services. But the pro-life contentions most often derided as “misinformation” are in fact true, and accusations of self-misrepresentation typically refer to little more than the fact that ads for them appear in online searches for the term “abortion.”
The abortion lobby is notoriously hostile to such alternatives to abortion, from publicity campaigns to malign crisis pregnancy centers, to attempts to strip medical licenses from pro-life doctors, to violence and threats against pregnancy centers that under the Biden administration were less likely to be prosecuted than purported cases of anti-abortion violence."
