"(LifeSiteNews) — Heterodox Pontifical Academy for Life (PAV) member Fr. Maurizio Chiodi has repeated his dissent on Catholic teaching, stating that “we have to rethink” traditional teaching on homosexuality and contraception.

Chiodi, known for his heterodoxy regarding the Church’s teaching on sexuality, was appointed by Pope Francis as a member of the PAV in 2017 and recently named a member of the Vatican study group on “Theological criteria and synodal methodologies for shared discernment of controversial doctrinal, pastoral, and ethical issues.” 

In an interview with the news outlet of the German bishops, katholisch.de, Chiodi reiterated his dissent on Catholic moral teaching.

“I believe that today we need to rethink the traditional – and for our time incomprehensible – ethical considerations on homosexuality,” the Italian theologian said.

“If in the past we spoke of homosexuality as ‘contra naturam,’ (against nature) today we must ask ourselves: what does ‘natura’ mean? This Latin word has many – very different – meanings, above all the meaning of universality, and we must recognize that universality is necessary for moral knowledge.”

While Chiodi appeared to acknowledge the universality of natural law, he qualified it by claiming that morality needs to be viewed in light of the experience and “lived life of an individual conscience with its specific culture.” This kind of argument is often used by moral relativists in an attempt to downplay objectively sinful actions like homosexual acts.

“I believe that sexual difference is constitutive of human existence because it is the origin of our life: we all know that as a child, we come from a mother and a father,” Chiodi admitted. “A homosexual person does not deny this. But they do not perceive this difference as attractive to themselves.”

“This sexual orientation does not depend on their decision. We must ask ourselves: What is the possible good for such a person? The question for a homosexual person is to live their sexuality by recognizing their vocation to relationships capable of closeness, care, communion, and fidelity to the other, and by seeking the good that is concretely possible for them.”

The Catholic Church has infallibly taught that homosexual acts are always gravely sinful. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’ They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

Chiodi indirectly admitted that those who dissent from Catholic teaching on sexuality are in a “hidden schism.”

“There was an Italian Catholic philosopher, Pietro Prini, who at the end of the last century spoke of a ‘hidden schism’ in the Catholic Church, especially with regard to sexual morality,” he told katholisch.de.

Fr. Chiodi also falsely insinuated that the Catholic teaching on contraception and sexual morality can be changed, as he has done before.

When asked about the Church potentially changing its stance on contraception and sexual morality, he said: “I do not believe that we need to discard our tradition, but we do need to rethink and reformulate it, starting from the Bible, in dialog with Christians, to hear about their experiences.”

“The aim of this difficult process, with its inevitable tensions, is to find the good of God for our humanity, today, in this time,” Chiodi continued. “Theology must endeavor to propose a new style – or a ‘change of model’ – to think ethically and theologically today, both in bioethics and in some questions of sexual morality.”

The Catholic Church infallibly teaches that contraception is always gravely sinful and against natural law. In Humanae Vitae, Pope St. Paul VI condemned “any action which either before, at the moment of, or after sexual intercourse, is specifically intended to prevent procreation—whether as an end or as a means.” The pontiff expressed this same teaching positively when he taught that “each and every marital act must of necessity retain its intrinsic relationship to the procreation of human life.”  

In an even more solemn manner than Paul VI, Pius XII taught in Casti Connubii that “no reason, however grave, may be put forward by which anything intrinsically against nature may become conformable to nature and morally good. Since, therefore, the conjugal act is destined primarily by nature for the begetting of children, those who in exercising it deliberately frustrate its natural power and purpose sin against nature and commit a deed which is shameful and intrinsically vicious.”

 The idea of "unity" of what is good and just with evil is itself, evil!!!!

"WASHINGTON D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Addressing participants of Father James Martin’s pro-LGBT “Outreach” conference, D.C.’s Cardinal Wilton Gregory said the heterodox event is aimed at “becoming a more inclusive family of faith.”

“In many respects you are engaging in an act of synodality – the vision and invitation proposed by Pope Francis that sincerely and openly speaking and listening to one another under the light and guidance of the Holy Spirit is the way that the Church grows in perfection,” said Gregory.

The D.C. cardinal offered the conference Mass on Saturday, as over 300 so-called “LGBTQ Catholics and their allies” assembled at Georgetown University for the now annual Outreach conference.

Led by Fr. Martin S.J., the conference is a product of his LGBT activist group Outreach, which has repeatedly cast doubt on the Biblical condemnation of sodomy and promoted “Pride Month,” transgenderism, and pro-LGBT blasphemy, as LifeSiteNews has reported.

Outreach is described as “where church leaders, both clergy and lay, can encounter” the so-called “LGBTQ faithful.” The group’s executive director is openly homosexual Michael J. O’Loughlin, a writer for the Jesuits’ America magazine.

This year’s Outreach conference is sponsored in part by a man named Jim O’Connor on behalf of his deceased “husband.”

The Catholic Church teaches, in accordance with Sacred Scripture and the constant tradition of the Church, that homosexual activity is mortally sinful and a “sin that cries to heaven” and that the homosexual inclination is “objectively disordered.” The Church also affirms the reality of the two sexes.

In his homily, Gregory quoted the Gospels to highlight “that unity – being joined with each other – is a goal to be achieved – and it remains a sign that Christ Himself is there in our midst.”

He lamented that “unity remains an elusive enterprise,” both in the political and ecclesial sphere. “Unity does not mean uniformity or sameness of opinion in heart and mind,” he remarked. “There is a word that we frequently use to describe the spiritual connectedness that must be the goal of our Catholic Church – Communion.”

But Gregory failed to note that Communion requires profession of the apostolic faith, which condemns homosexuality. (CCC 815)

Praising the attendees of the conference, Gregory opined that the “assembly is dedicated to the pursuit of our becoming a more inclusive family of faith.”

He added that “[o]ccasionally, we may find it difficult as Catholics and as Americans to achieve such a state of being together harmoniously.” However, he called on the participants to prioritize “unity,” saying that “unity must remain a goal and a desire for both institutions – an aspiration that we must strive to achieve and to value.” 

As has become customary, the conference received an endorsement from Pope Francis, as a handwritten letter from the Pope was publicized last Thursday.

“I am glad that Cardinal Gregory will celebrate the Mass; I will be spiritually with him and with all of you, united in prayer,” wrote Francis in the letter sent to Martin.

While Gregory praised the conference for purportedly intending to assist the Church become “a more inclusive family of faith,” the keynote speakers are notable for controversy over LGBT issues and promoting a non-Catholic acceptance of homosexuality.

As reported by LifeSite on Friday, ex-Jesuit Father William Hart McNichols and Jewish Biblical professor Amy-Jill Levine were billed as the keynote speakers for the conference. 

McNichols is an openly homosexual priest who has become known for his LGBT activism.

A longtime iconographer, McNichols’ works include a number of pro-LGBT, sacrilegious items, including the work from 1989 “The Stations of the Cross of a Person With AIDS.”

Another work of his from that decade was his 1986 “AIDS Crucifixion,” a pro-homosexual image that blasphemes Christ.

Dr. Levine is a professor of New Testament and Jewish studies at the Hartford International University for Religion and Peace. Though speaking at an event billed for Catholics, Levine has stated that she is “not a believer in Jesus” as God.

Her Biblical interpretation includes falsely arguing that homosexual acts are permitted by certain Scriptural passages. However, Catholic moral teaching declares that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered” and “contrary to the natural law.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church is very clear that homosexual activity can never be approved and repeats that “[h]omosexual persons are called to chastity.” 

In 1986, Pope John Paul II and the Vatican’s doctrinal office issued the document “On the pastoral care of homosexual persons,” which emphasizes how “special concern and pastoral attention should be directed toward those who have this condition, lest they be led to believe that the living out of this orientation in homosexual activity is a morally acceptable option. It is not.”

"VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — The Holy See has issued a statement in response to the transgender mockery of the Last Supper at the Olympics opening ceremony, after being widely condemned in Catholic circles for having kept silent for over a week on the issue.

Late Saturday night Rome time, a statement was issued without warning to the press corps accredited to the Vatican. The statement, issued in French, came in response to the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games held Friday, July 26.

It read in full:

The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, and can only join the voices that have been raised in recent days to deplore the offence caused to many Christians and believers of other religions.

In a prestigious event where the whole world gathers around common values, there should be no allusions ridiculing the religious convictions of many people.

Freedom of expression, which of course is not in question, finds its limit in respect for others.

The Holy See’s statement comes over a week after the Olympics’ opening, and many have already suggested that the statement is too little and too late.

The opening ceremony featured a caricature show, designed by the homosexual Thomas Jolly, which saw drag queens and dancers perform a mockery of the Last Supper, particularly appearing to faux-imitate Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper painting. 

Jolly claimed after international outrage that the blasphemous ceremony was not meant to imitate the Last Supper but rather pagan gods. However, the woman in the center of the blasphemous display, Barbara Butch, admitted that she was imitating Jesus Christ, having posted on her Instagram account that she depicted “Olympic Jesus.”

The ceremony drew instant and continued outrage from Catholics – both lay and clerical – along with strong condemnation from secular figures such as tech billionaire Elon Musk, journalist Piers Morgan and U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Johnson stated that “[t]he war on our faith and traditional values knows no bounds today,” and Musk issued a number of criticisms, including the warning that “[u]nless there is more bravery to stand up for what is fair and right, Christianity will perish.”

Since then, numerous Catholics have been calling on the Pope and the Holy See to issue an official condemnation of the event, but the Vatican’s silence had been markedly noticeable.

While the Pope customarily makes reference to topical issues around the globe at the end of his Sunday address, often expressing his solidarity with particular groups of people and calling for prayers from Catholics, he made no mention of the Olympic opening ceremony during his July 28 Angelus, while nevertheless making a number of special mentions for causes and celebrations around the world.

The scandal-plagued Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia – president of the Pontifical Academy for Life – made a peculiar statement, trying to join in condemnation and also defense of the spectacle.

The only other statement from a Vatican official in any capacity regarding the Olympic’s opening ceremony had been that from Archbishop Charles Scicluna. The Maltese prelate is adjunct secretary of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and sent a message to the French ambassador of Malta, noting his “distress and great disappointment at the insult to us Christians.” 

The morning after the opening ceremony, the French Catholic bishops issued a collective condemnation of the event. Numerous U.S. bishops also raised their voices in protest, calling for prayers of reparation and fasting.

“The deplorable depiction of the Last Supper was not in any way artistic, but instead was a direct and blatant assault upon Christianity,” wrote Bishop James Conley of Lincoln, Nebraska. “The Last Supper represents Jesus giving His Body and Blood for us in anticipation of His Crucifixion. It is one of the greatest acts of love in the history of the world. Never should it be mocked and treated in such a way.”

To that number of U.S. prelates, Cardinal Raymond Burke also joined his voice on July 31, calling the opening ceremony “an unbelievable manifestation of the darkness and sin in our world: the abominable mockery of the Holy Eucharist at its Institution.”

“It is difficult to imagine anything more debased and blasphemous,” he said, before continuing:

That such an act could take place shows us, in a most painful way, how what was once a Christian culture has become the theater of Satan and those who cooperate with his thoroughly evil plans, the plans of ‘a murderer from the beginning’ who ‘has nothing to do with the truth,’ the plans of ‘a liar and the father of lies.’ (John 8:44)

Describing the spectacle as “sacrilegious and vulgar representation,” Gerhard Cardinal Müller stated that “it has managed in one fell swoop to sully the noble face of the Olympics and to offend millions of believers around the world.”

Then on August 2, one week after, Burke led a group of international cardinal and bishops in issuing a collective demand for an apology from the Olympic committee.

“We, Catholic bishops from around the world, on behalf of Christians everywhere, demand that the Olympic Committee repudiate this blasphemous action and apologize to all people of faith,” the letter continues.

Many of the signatories had already issued their own individual condemnations of the opening ceremony.

The Vatican’s 8-day silence has been noted by many Catholics, and its peculiar late-night publication over a week after the event has not helped to assuage fears that the Holy See is unable to deliver effective leadership in defending the Catholic faith in the public sphere."

The only Senator not to sign the letter was Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who opposes most forms of foreign aid to anyone.

According to Middle East expert Michael Doran of the Hudson Institute, the embargo consists of three forms: large bombs that have been deliberately withheld; shipments that have been approved by Congress but which the Biden administration is withholding by not informing Congress that they are ready to be shipped; and arms transactions that the Biden administration is blocking between the State of Israel and private arms manufacturers in the U.S.

Biden hopes to use the partial arms embargo to prevent Israel from moving from defense to offense against terrorists."

Outreach itself operates “under the auspices of America Media,” which oversees the left-wing, Jesuit-run America Magazine. The group is the brainchild of Martin and his past pro-LGBT activities, as it aims to become a global resource center “where church leaders, both clergy and lay, can encounter the LGBTQ faithful, in their ‘joys and hopes’ and ‘griefs and anxieties’ as well as engage in respectful dialogue.”

Since its inception, Outreach has enjoyed a close relationship with Pope Francis, chiefly due to the personal friendship between Francis and Martin. 

Indeed, the Pope has now sent at least five publicly-known letters to Martin and the Outreach group in relation to the LGBT conferences they stage, although the first in 2021 was before Outreach was officially launched.

In 2021, just prior to Martin’s online LGBT conference, Francis wrote to the Jesuit thanking him for his “pastoral zeal” and “ability to be close to people, with that closeness that Jesus had and that reflects the closeness of God.” The Pope described Martin’s LGBT advocacy as being an imitation of the “style of God.”

Outreach was then launched on May 1, 2022, and only days later Francis replied to a letter Martin sent him in which he argued that a “selective” Church is “a sect,” and decrying what he styled as the Church’s “rejection” of “LGBT Catholic[s].”

Francis decried “rejection from the Church,” saying that for so-called LGBT individuals “I would have them recognize it not as ‘the rejection of the Church,’ but instead of ‘people in the Church.’ The Church is a mother and calls together all her children.”

Following the June 2022 Outreach conference, Francis again wrote to Martin in August 2022 after the Jesuit priest had sent the Pontiff details about the 2022 event. Francis praised Martin for “working in the culture of encounter,” which, he said, “shortens distances and enriches us with our differences, just as Jesus did.”

Then for the 2023 event, Francis continued the established practice by sending another hand-written letter. He thanked Martin “for all the good you are doing,” and also expressed his closeness to all at the conference.

Martin has met with Francis privately on a number of occasions, and was personally selected by the Pope to participate in the current Synod on Synodality. He is also a papally appointed member of the Dicastery for Communications.

Martin’s favor with Pope Francis comes alongside his longstanding record of promoting LGBT ideology in dissent from Catholic teaching. The Jesuit priest is described as “arguably the most prominent activist” in the Church for LGBT issues.

His record also includes promoting images drawn from a series of blasphemous works by homosexual artist Douglas Blanchard and describing viewing God as male as “damaging.” Martin has additionally promoted homosexual unions and called for openly homosexual individuals to kiss during the sign of peace at the Novus Ordo Mass.

In contrast, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s (CDF) 1986 document “On the pastoral care of homosexual persons” stipulates that a “truly pastoral approach will appreciate the need for homosexual persons to avoid the near occasions of sin.”

“We wish to make it clear that departure from the Church’s teaching, or silence about it, in an effort to provide pastoral care is neither caring nor pastoral,” wrote the Vatican’s doctrinal office. “Only what is true can ultimately be pastoral. The neglect of the Church’s position prevents homosexual men and women from receiving the care they need and deserve.”

The CDF added how “special concern and pastoral attention should be directed toward those who have this condition, lest they be led to believe that the living out of this orientation in homosexual activity is a morally acceptable option. It is not.”
