"(LifeSiteNews) — Pope Leo XIV on Thursday named Bishop Ferenc Palánki of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza, Hungary, who previously said he does not pray for the conversion of Reformed Christians and other non-Catholics, as the next metropolitan archbishop of Kalocsa-Kecskemét.
In its September 3 daily bulletin, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo had accepted the resignation of Archbishop Balázs Bábel, the previous archbishop of Kalocsa-Kecskemét, and named Bishop Palánki as his replacement. During a 2024 interview about his ecumenical efforts with local non-Catholic bishops in the Diocese of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza, Palánki said, glaringly, that he does not pray for the conversion of his Reformed Christian brethren to Catholicism but rather that they become “good Reformed Christians.”
“I never pray that Reformed Christians will become Catholics but rather that they will be good Reformed Christians. I trust that my Reformed brothers and sisters, in turn, pray that I will be a good Catholic and stand my ground,” Palánki said at the time.
In the same interview, the bishop also emphasized the importance of fostering ecumenical Christian unity because “we are all followers of Christ.”

Despite ecumenical and interfaith efforts by Palánki and many Catholic prelates in recent decades, the Church has consistently taught that the Catholic Church, founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ, is the one true Church outside of which there is no salvation.
Therefore, merely praying for Reformed Christians to be “good Reformed Christians” and not for their conversion is a tremendous disservice to their souls.
Palánki, 62, was ordained a priest in 1994, and has since served in several parishes across various Hungarian dioceses. In late 2010, he was named titular bishop of Fidoloma and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Eger and received episcopal consecration in February 2011. A few years later, in 2015, he was appointed bishop of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza by Pope Francis.
Palánki has also served as spiritual director of the Vác Seminary from 2005 to 2010, the spiritual director of the Central Seminary of Budapest in 2010, and defender of the bond at the diocesan tribunal for over a decade (1999-2010). He also currently chairs the Commission for the Clergy and Consecrated Life, the Legal Commission, and the Doctrinal Commission of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (MKPK).
In recent months, Pope Leo has appointed several bishops who seem to have contradicted the teaching that the Catholic Church is the true Church founded by Christ.
Last week, the 267th pontiff named Bishop Lizardo Estrada Herrera, O.S.A, who just weeks ago attended a ritual offering to the pagan fertility goddess Pachamama, as coadjutor archbishop of Cusco.
