"(LifeSiteNews) — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops drew sharp criticism from Catholic influencers after posting a Yom Kippur greeting from Bishop Joseph C. Bambera of Scranton, Pennsylvania, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.
The Sunday post and accompanying video described the Jewish Day of Atonement as “the holiest day of the Jewish year, observed with fasting, prayer, and repentance, and with the work of reconciliation with God and with one another.”
Without ever mentioning Jesus Christ, Bambera said, “As our Jewish friends and neighbors observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, I want to extend my warmest wishes for a meaningful and a peaceful day.”
“These themes also resonate deeply with us as Catholics, and our relationship with the Jewish people is not simply a matter of dialogue between two religious communities. It is rooted in the deep spiritual bonds that unite us,” the bishop continued.
“As Catholics, we are called not only to oppose anti-Semitism when it appears, but also to deepen our understanding of Judaism and of the Jewish people,” he proposed before concluding with a traditional Hebrew greeting associated with Yom Kippur, “G’mar Chatimah Tovah.”

Leading an extensive list of critics was Carrie Prejean Boller, a convert to Catholicism in 2025 who was infamously removed from President Donald Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission (RLC) after affirming that Catholics do not embrace Zionism.
In her response, the former Miss California posted, “Catholics do not wish people a ‘meaningful’ observance of a sacrifice Jesus Christ already completed.”
“His Body and Blood were shed once to atone for sin. The High Priest entered the sanctuary and offered Himself on the altar. A perfect sacrifice, once for all. It shouldn’t take a newly confirmed Catholic to remind a bishop of this,” she concluded.
Boller has previously clashed with the USCCB over related issues, including a leaked memo from Bambera to brother bishops that she argued misrepresented her testimony on the RLC.
Council of Florence: Observing Old Testament rites a mortal sin
Popular pen-named commentator American Reform followed with similar observations, stating, “Celebrating Yom Kippur is an implicit rejection of Christ and His messianic dignity. All the signs and ceremonies of the old Judaism are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, having pointed towards him in the OT. Stop promoting Judaizing and mortal sin.”
Backing up this claim, radio host David J. Reilly cited the Council of Florence’s document Cantate Domino from 1492 which affirms, the Church “believes, professes and teaches that the legal prescriptions of the old Testament or the Mosaic law… once our lord Jesus Christ who was signified by them had come, came to an end… Whoever, after the passion, places his hope in the legal prescriptions and submits himself to them as necessary for salvation and as if faith in Christ without them could not save, sins mortally… after the promulgation of the gospel they cannot be observed without loss of eternal salvation.”
Summarizing this established doctrine, Reilly wrote, “Observing the Old Law after the passion is a mortal sin, and will send your soul to Hell according to the Council of Florence.”
“Confirming Jews in their error is the *highest* form of ‘Jew Hate,’ since it will damn them to hell,” he warned. “Nostra Aetate is a disaster for the Church.”

USCCB also rebuked by Holy Land prelates for collaboration with Jewish Zionists
New polls of Americans have revealed a dramatic 67-point shift in attitudes against Israel, likely due largely to the ongoing devastation they have exacted against the Palestinian people in recent years. Additionally, a consensus has emerged among objective observers declaring such ongoing crimes to constitute a genocide, yet the USCCB has said little to nothing by way of condemning these massive crimes of which their own national government in Washington, DC remains complicit as a necessary accomplice.
In April 2025, the largest ecumenical organization of Christian churches in the Holy Land, Kairos Palestine, led by its president, former Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem His Beatitude Michel Sabbah, issued a stirring open letter to the USCCB crying out for help as they face a “war of extermination” being waged against them by the “powerful apartheid state” of Israel that is “supported militarily and financially by the United States.”
The prelates, priests and other leaders charged the conference with ignoring the suffering of their Palestinian Christian siblings, affirmed that resistance to the Israeli occupation, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide against them cannot equate with “antisemitism,” and demanded the USCCB publicly denounce these ongoing crimes while seeking to bring an end to USA military funding for Israel until it complies with international laws.

An earlier letter from the organization, dated March 25, 2025, sharply rebuked the USCCB for collaborating with the pro-abortion Zionist American Jewish Committee (AJC) on a document titled, Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition, which they said “distorts reality … equates Palestinian resistance (to Israel’s illegal occupation) with antisemitism.” They warned the document further serves “to silence voices advocating for truth and justice in the Holy Land,” at a time when the indigenous Christian community’s “presence in the Holy Land is on the verge of extinction,” and thus ironically equates to “a form of hate speech against Palestinians.”

Spearheading the production of the “Translate Hate” document with the pro-abortion and heretical Zionist AJC, was Bishop Bambera who was successful at releasing its highly disputed contents under the banner of the USCCB and its Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs committee."
