The Truth About "Catholic" Relief Services: It Is Not Merely A Non-Profit That Helps The Poor

 I wonder how many folks are taken in when an organization uses the august handle "Catholic" in the name of said organization? 

(Similarly, one can claim the august handle, Christian, but just what does that mean these days?)

Catholic/Christian, okay, I have to admit that I too would like to give the mental benefit of the doubt and think that such and such an entity must and should be supported with my (our) tax dollars.

After all, you would think that the poor and homeless would be helped by anyone or any thing claiming to be Christian/Catholic, fulfilling the Gospel message to help same, but that is not always the case.

In fact, soon after President Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, he appointed his team to look into the funding of some very "prestigious" organizations, both government and non-government (NGOs), that supposedly helps and supports those folks mentioned above -- again, with our tax dollars.

We also know that said organizations, not all, but many, have been funding the invasion of our country by getting illegal aliens through our porous southern border (with the help of the cartels?) and transporting them throughout the fruited plain.  "Catholic" Charities and "Catholic" Relief Services comes to mind, but there are others, many others!

Michael Hichborn of the Lapanto Institute has been tracking and investigating "Catholic" Relief Services and "Catholic" Charities for over 15 years and has come up with stunning findings, especially the amount of tax dollars going to these anti-Catholic, anti-life organizations.

"(LifeSiteNews) — President Donald Trump’s attacks on the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has Catholic Relief Services (CRS) worried it may have to let half of its staff go, according to an internal email written by its CEO.

“We anticipate that we will be a much smaller overall organization by the end of this fiscal year,” Sean Callahan reportedly said this week.

News of the potential firings infuriated dissident laity and clergy but has given conservative Catholics like Michael Hichborn reason to celebrate.

Speaking with Raymond Arroyo on EWTN’s The World Over last night, Hichborn praised Trump’s actions as being long overdue.

“Catholic Relief Services, as an organization, shouldn’t be receiving federal funds anyway simply because USAID was created primarily as a population control organization,” he said.

Hichborn is the founder of the Lepanto Institute. He has spent the last decade exposing corrupt institutions and clergy in the Catholic Church, especially the Marxist-supporting Catholic Campaign for Human Development fund.

Hichborn explained to Arroyo on Thursday that CRS is not really a “Catholic” organization but rather a “government” entity that regularly hires non-Catholics who simply carry out USAID’s marching orders, even when it comes to promoting contraception.

“Whenever somebody applies for a grant, what they are applying for is to participate or to control a program already instituted by USAID,” he said. “So, it’s not that USAID is giving them money in order to drill wells or to put out malaria nets and that kind of thing. USAID is saying we have a program that we want you to implement and when you implement the program, here are some partners that you can work with and these are the parameters that we have in mind.”

USAID distributes over $44 billion in taxpayer dollars every year. Some of the controversial grants it has made in recent years includes the funding of Ukrainian media, supporting Tel Aviv University in Israel, promoting “diversity” initiatives in Serbia, and backing an anti-Catholic event in Ireland.

Over the past 48 hours, scores of social media users have exposed the bizarre programs USAID has supported. LifeSite’s in-house geopolitical analyst Frank Wright has said that the agency essentially operates as an arm of the Deep State in that it promotes secularism and left-wing policies abroad.

CRS has been the top beneficially of USAID funding over the past nine years. Starting in 2013 and lasting through the 2022 fiscal year, USAID awarded CRS a whopping $4.6 billion in total funding, more than any other organization on the planet. A 2024 audit discovered CRS had received more than half of its $1.2 billion budget from the U.S. government. It currently employs roughly 7,000 people across the world.

“USAID in implementing these global structures is creating a new form of global governance,” Hichborn said Thursday. “What they’re trying to do is create these supply chains that go beyond governance … so that they can create an infrastructure that is globally reliant.”

As would be expected, upper-level CRS staff are well compensated for their services. As pointed out by Hichborn on social media this week, CRS president Sean Callahan makes over $600,000 per year. Top executives at other Church-backed organizations such as Catholic Charities make similar amounts.

“Nobody should be getting wealthy on the idea of helping the poor,” Hichborn told Arroyo.

But it is not just the generous compensation packages that are unsettling. As Hichborn has pointed out on his website over the past nine years, CRS employees themselves are extremely liberal.

In 2016, the Lepanto Institute published a study that found 98% of political donations made by CRS workers went to “pro-abortion candidates and causes.” In 2024, that figure had risen to 99%.

Catholic Charities in the U.S., another non-profit backed by the Church, was also shown to have a left-leaning bias, with 76% of its employees giving donations to Democrats.

Claims that CRS is just a non-partisan, agenda-free charity only interested in helping the poor are obviously false.

What’s more, in 2019, Hichborn’s group concluded that CRS is “morally complicit in the promotion and spread of condoms and contraception through federally funded projects.” In 2020, a group of prominent Catholics, including LifeSite’s John-Henry Westen, called on Congress to investigate CRS for its involvement in such matters.

Liberal Jesuit James Martin has been one the most outspoken defenders of USAID as of late. On X this week, he praised its work as a form of charity. But he was rightly called out by, among others, X user Jeff Carlson as well as former Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who reminded him of the many nefarious activities it has been involved in.

As Trump’s reassessment of USAID continues to unfold, it remains to be seen if CRS or any of the other Church-aligned groups that receive millions of dollars from taxpayers will keep their funding. The appetite for backing them appears to be on the wane especially given that Barbara Graham, program director and immigration attorney for Catholic Charities, released a video on YouTube last month advising illegal immigrants on how to avoid being deported.

Why should taxpayer dollars go to organizations that so blatantly make money off encouraging people to break the law?"

However, we also know that the overwhelming majority of the bishops refuse to censure, or publicly ex-communicate, such politicians' egregious sacrilege by continuing to arrogantly and pridefully receive the Eucharist, while supporting the soul-killing culture of death.

The continued silence of those bishops speaks loud and clear of their diabolical support for the Demonrat party, leading many of their flock to eternal perdition, instead of fulfilling the charism of their office to guide the flock to Christ, Our Lord...

"(Live Action) — Months after Delaware Governor John Carney vetoed a bill that would legalize assisted suicide, lawmakers are once again considering legislation that would allow a terminally ill person to end their own life.

House Bill 140 would allow assisted suicide for a terminally ill person if that person first makes two verbal requests and one written request. The terminal diagnosis and the requests must be approved by two physicians or advanced practice registered nurses. Such “safeguards” are almost always in place when assisted suicide laws are first enacted, but, as has happened elsewhere, they are often repealed or loosened within a number of years.

Rep. Valerie Jones-Giltner raised concerns about the idea that a doctor can predict a person’s life expectancy, arguing that she has personally heard stories of many people who were given a terminal diagnosis, only to live much longer than expected.

“I have received a plethora of emails against this, so I’m not just taking my personal clinician opinion and my faith-based opinion, but I’m taking that of all of my constituents in this,” Jones-Giltner said.

Dr. Neil Kaye, a former forensic psychiatrist, testified that many medical professionals are uncomfortable with the idea of helping a patient end his or her life.

“Even most physicians who support the idea refuse to engage in this process,” Kaye said. “Helping people to kill themselves should never be a part of a treatment plan. I don’t want you to think I’m just against people doing this – I’m against the medical profession doing it.”

Last year, legalized assisted suicide was all but considered a done deal after legislation passed both the Delaware House and Senate. However, Carney, a Democrat, surprised many when he decided to veto the bill, calling it a “deeply personal issue” to which he was “fundamentally opposed.” According to Delaware Public Media, the state’s new governor, Matt Meyer, has said he would sign a bill if it makes it to his desk.

The bill survived the House Health and Human Development Committee last week and now heads to the full House floor for debate."

Let that sink in...

Now, I ask: why is this being proposed in the hellish state of Washington?

If I might take a guess, for several reasons...

First, these Marxist communists -- and that's what they are! -- hate the true Catholic Church.  Second, the lunatic proposing this diabolical bill is an apostate "Catholic".  Third, if it weren't for the demonic abuse by the novus ordo, synodal "clergy," in the phantom "church," then this nonsense would not even enter the minds of even the Christ haters.  But since this horrendous abuse surfaced -- officially, by the Boston Globe, in 2002 -- the anti-Christs have been having a field say with all Catholics, both bad -- and good!

Of course, this pejorative, unfortunately, is not limited to the new, novus ordo, synodal "church," but insinuates that even in the traditional movement there are such crimes.  This I have heard is true, but the numbers are miniscule compared to the McCarrick types and their crimes against the young and innocent, even seminarians, that occurred for decades upon decades by homosexual "priests," "bishops," and "cardinals".  You know, those wolves in sheep's clothing that Our Lord warned us about... Remember too, He also admonished us, that by their fruits you will know them!

As a result of this devilish activity that cries to Heaven for vengeance, we have these fallen creatures coming out of the woodwork, showing their disdain and hate for the true Catholic Church founded by Christ on the Rock of St. Peter.

"OLYMPIA, Washington (LifeSiteNews) — Priests should break the Seal of Confession or face nearly a year in prison, according to a Democratic state senator in Washington.

Sen. Noel Frame has once again introduced legislation trying to make Catholic priests report abuse that they hear of during Confession – this time saying there will be “no exemption.” There is a hearing on a companion bill in the Washington House of Representatives today. A vote in committee is scheduled for tomorrow.

While Frame, a Democrat, said the bill will eliminate exemptions, it actually singles out priests while protecting other “privileged communications.” Spouses, attorneys, and advocates for sexual assault victims are among those who retain their right to not disclose suspicions of abuse.

Priests face automatic excommunication for violating the confessional. Canon 1386 states, “A confessor (priest) who directly violates the sacramental seal incurs a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See; he who does so only indirectly is to be punished according to the gravity of the offence.”

Last year, Frame worked alongside the Washington Catholic Conference on a bill that would have created a “duty to warn the department or law enforcement when they have reasonable cause to believe that a child is at imminent risk of being abused or neglected, even if that belief is informed by information obtained in part as a result of a penitential communication.”

At the time, Sen. Frame and the Catholic conference gave contradictory explanations for the bill. Frame told her colleagues that she wanted to go further and eliminate all exemptions, but that such a bill could not pass. Meanwhile, the Catholic conference said they supported this bill because they feared a law eliminating all exemptions would pass, as LifeSiteNews previously reported.

This year, Frame is not working with the Catholic conference, which opposes her bill. She said she is a victim of childhood sexual abuse, but not by a priest. She is an adult Catholic convert who said she has left the Church.

The bill exempts priests from being forced to testify, but they would still need to go to authorities to alert them to potential abuse. This would presumably require them to identify the potential abuser – the person they heard a Confession from.

Sen. Frame dismissed what she called “religious freedom” concerns about the bill during a hearing last week.

She referenced an investigation by then-Attorney General Bob Ferguson into possible abuse cover-up by Washington Catholic leaders as a reason she could not “stomach” religious freedom objections to her bill.

“I have tried really hard over the last couple of years to find a balance and to strike a careful compromise,” she said before saying “sorry” for not being able to “make a compromise anymore.” She criticized efforts to protect clergy-penitent privilege “in the name of religious freedom.”

She said the bill does not change “prosecution,” but the law does not state that clergy won’t face it.

Survivors of sexual abuse and activists supported the bill. However, a Washington bishop and the Catholic conference spoke out against the legislation, prompting a testy exchange.

Bishop Frank Schuster, auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Seattle, began his testimony by thanking abuse victims, including Frame, for sharing their stories. He shared how he was able to counsel a “young man” who came to him before he went to meet up with someone he met online. Schuster shared how in that context he was able to alert the authorities and the boy’s parents and help the person avoid a dangerous situation.

He also refuted a suggestion by one witness that Pope Francis should simply change canon law to allow for priests to reveal what they hear in Confessions.

After Schuster shared his history of helping victims of abuse, he reiterated that he appreciates what Frame is trying to do but that the law as written cannot be supported.

“You’re failing us,” Sen. Frame said, berating the Catholic bishop. She then shared she would not be raising her child as Catholic because of the Church’s opposition to breaking the Seal of Confession. She called herself a “former Catholic.”

She then compared the Church’s opposition with an “abusive relationship.”

Schuster reminded Frame he wants to work with her, but he does not have “power over the Seal of Confessional.”

Priest banned from hearing Confessions supports bill – much like failed Montana version

Also supporting the bill is Father Jim Connell.

It was a busy day for Connell, a retired priest, as he also spoke out that day in support of mandating priests break the Seal of Confession in Montana. He is currently not allowed to hear Confessions anywhere in the world because the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, where he is incardinated, removed his faculties.

“The removal of Father Jim Connell’s faculties to hear confessions and grant absolution in the sacrament of reconciliation remains unchanged,” Father Nathan Reesman, vicar for the clergy of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, told LifeSiteNews last week.

“This restriction will remain in place as long as Father continues to falsely claim that there can ever be some exception to maintaining the confessional seal,” Reesman said. “We firmly oppose any weakening of the legal protections of the clergy penitent privilege.”

The Montana bill was tabled in committee last week, effectively killing it.

After national media coverage, that bill had been amended to protect clergy-penitent privilege but would still require priests to disclose what they hear while privately counseling someone.

Much like Frame, the Montana sponsor said that she left the Catholic Church. Like Frame, she also ignored religious freedom concerns.

“I have spoken to various faith communities” and “members of the Catholic clergy” across the country, Democrat Sen. Mary Ann Dunwell told LifeSiteNews. She said that clergy told her they could grant absolution for sins and still report abuse.

LifeSiteNews asked about the excommunicable offense of violating the Seal of Confession and how the clergy would be able to report abuse without being excommunicated. “You know that’s really off the subject of the bill, you’re going to have to ask them that,” Dunwell said during the phone interview. However, she did not provide the names and contact info of the clergy members whom she spoke to when asked during a follow-up email.

She then amended the bill, sharing how she had grown in understanding of the problems with it after discussions with Catholic leaders."

"(LifeSiteNews) — President Donald Trump’s border chief Tom Homan called out Pope Francis for the hypocrisy of his criticism of Trump’s plan to deport illegal immigrants.

In a January 19 appearance on the “Che Tempo Che Fa” program, Francis said that U.S. deportations of illegal migrants would be a “disgrace.” On Friday, Homan pointed out that U.S. policy is consistent with the Vatican’s enforcement of its own borders.

“They have a wall around the Vatican. If you illegally enter the Vatican, the crime is serious,” said Homan during a Newsmax appearance, adding that anyone who enters there illegally will spend time in jail.

In fact, just this past December, the Vatican ramped up penalties for those who illegally enter its restricted areas, which now include fines of about 10,000 to 25,000 euros or $10,200 to $25,700 and jail time ranging from one to four years. Those convicted of illegal entry into the Vatican are banned from the city-state for up to 15 years.

A large portion of Vatican City, including the palaces, gardens, and offices, are surrounded by walls about 40 feet high, and its gates are manned by Swiss Guards who protect the city from intruders.

Homan remarked regarding Francis, “He can protect the Vatican where he lives. He can build a wall where he lives. The American people are not allowed that?”

“Securing the border saves lives,” stressed Homan. “When less people come, less women get raped by the cartel. Less children die in the river. Less Americans die from fentanyl overdoses.”

A report released in October found that child sex trafficking alone tripled under the Biden-Harris administration’s open borders policies.

“I’m a lifelong Catholic. I was born Catholic. I’ve been through Catholic doctrine. Look, he ought to concentrate on fixing the Catholic Church … he’s got big problems there,” Homan said. 

“He ought to stick to the Catholic Church and fix that. That’s a mess,” he concluded. Indeed, under Francis’ leadership, the primary papal duty of clarifying and defending Church doctrine has been neglected in favor of a multitude of ambiguous and misleading documents and statements that have given the impression of condoning sin, such as Amoris Laetitia and Fiducia Supplicans, which suggest, respectively, that adulterous “couples” may receive Holy Communion without Confession and that homosexual “couples” may be “blessed.”

Francis has repeatedly claimed that opposing immigration is a “grave sin.” However, the Catechism of the Catholic Church acknowledges the right of political leaders to regulate immigration:

“…political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption.”

Furthermore, the Catechism outlines that “immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.”

This teaching was expounded upon in 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI in his message for the 97th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. While quoting from Pope John Paul II to defend the “possibility” for people “to enter another country to look for better conditions of life,” Benedict also defended the rights of the home nations to restrict such entries:

At the same time, States have the right to regulate migration flows and to defend their own frontiers, always guaranteeing the respect due to the dignity of each and every human person. Immigrants, moreover, have the duty to integrate into the host Country, respecting its laws and its national identity."

"Intelligence agents in Sudan reportedly arrested and tortured at least seven Christians northeast of the capital city of Khartoum.

The Sudanese Christian Youth Union reported to Morning Star News, a nonprofit news outlet that focuses on the global persecution of Christians, that members of the Sudanese Church of Christ were looking for refuge in areas dominated by the Sudan Armed Forces.

Agents of the Military Intelligence accused the Christians on Jan. 14 of aiding the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, but the Christians denied those claims, per Morning Star News.

Sudan is currently in a civil war between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, displacing millions and forcing others to leave the country as refugees.

The claims were merely an excuse to target the Christians, the Sudanese Christian Youth Union argued.

Shinbago Mugaddam, a Christian attorney, told Morning Star News that the Military Intelligence tortured the believers into confessing to the crime.

“They were arrested by the army intelligence and were subjected to beatings and interrogations,” Mugaddam contended.

The lawyer is currently residing in another country as a refugee.

He added that “a case was opened against them where the complainant and the witnesses for the accusation were all members of the armed forces.”

“The court did not ask them whether they needed a lawyer or had witnesses to deny this incident, knowing that they were beaten and forced to confess and provide evidence against themselves,” he continued.

The Sudanese Christian Youth Union called for their release and called for human rights groups to do the same.

Persecution targeted toward Christians is well-documented in Sudan, which currently ranks fifth on the world watch list published every year by Open Doors.

The nonprofit noted that Christian leaders are “targeted by false charges, including terrorism and apostasy,” even though the apostasy law in the predominantly Islamic nation was overturned five years ago.

“Converts from Islam face violence, imprisonment, forced marriage, rejection, sexual violence, disinheritance, and losing custody of their children,” the nonprofit said.

“Many are forced to flee their homes, or feel that staying is unsustainable.”

Christians who live in areas with especially intense fighting are more likely to see persecution, especially as Islamic militants take advantage of the war to eliminate Christianity in Sudan.

“The scope and intensity of pressure on Christians have grown substantially this year, as the civil war has introduced extreme levels of violence and hardship,” Open Doors added."
