Genetic testing company Herasight touted a new method to predict depressive disorder in children, ignoring the fact that destroying embryos for this reason would have deprived the world of Abraham Lincoln and others.

A brief comment: I do not agree with everything that is mentioned in this article, that is, those folks that the author lists as those snuffed out through IVF rejection and destruction, such as another possible Lincoln, or a Harry Potter novel, etc. For one, Lincoln did not "free the slaves," and Harry Potter? Really? You get the picture, having said that, the bizarre elements of "testing" for perfection -- and that's what it amounts to, is right out of the ethos of "1984" and the Hitler's Third Reich!
Now, with the demonrats in control of both the House and the Senate, watch for a massive attack on the pre-born, much worse than is already happening, even under the Trump administration...
"(LifeSiteNews) – Genetic testing company Herasight announced a new method of screening embryos for a propensity for depression, specifically touting it as a way parents can ensure they only get a “happy child.”
In a November 2 Substack post, Herasight announced MDD-PGT, billed as a “genetic predictor of major depressive disorder (MDD).
“Our predictor explains about 50% more of the variance in depression liability than a score built from the latest public depression GWAS by the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC),” the post explained. “It predicts depression just as well between siblings as it does in the general population, which is the comparison that matters for embryo screening. In children, it was associated with 1,494 of 2,328 measures of mood, behavior, friendships, activities and sleep from the age of 9 onwards.”
The article explained that the process started with “genetic studies of depression in several biobanks,” reconstructing some records as necessary, then integrated the findings with “genetic data on correlated psychiatric traits using multi-trait analysis of” genome-wide association studies and “estimated the effect of each genetic variant with (statistical method) SBayesRC,” with the combined results boasting “about twice the genome-wide association signal of the latest public depression GWAS” by the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, and “are almost perfectly genetically correlated with it, so they capture essentially the same genetic signal with much more power.”
“Every parent wants a happy child,” Herasight sociologist Tobias Wolfram tweeted,” who touted that “Kids with a lower MDD-PGT tend to sleep better, fight less and enjoy jokes more. With 10 embryos, picking the lowest-risk one cuts depression risk by over 40%.”
“How many people reading this would have survived the cut over their lifetime?” Them Before Us founder Katy Faust responded. “What’s it going to take for people to condemn an industry eliminating unwanted children based on everything from eye color to early baldness to possible moodiness?”
In a November 5 post at Them Before Us Substack, Josh Wood noted that exterminating those with a propensity for depression before birth would have deprived history of Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. president who led America through the Civil War and ultimately freed the slaves; Harry Potter creator and women’s rights/gender sanity advocate JK Rowling; Buzz Aldrin, the second astronaut to walk on the moon; War and Peace author Leo Tolstoy; Charles Spurgeon, a historic preacher who trained more than 900 pastors; Dictionary of the English Language author Samuel Johnson; and poet and hymn writer William Cowper, among countless others.
Herasight’s latest “innovation” highlighted the enormous eugenics potential of the in vitro fertilization industry. The IVF process entails the conscious creation of scores of “excess” embryonic humans only to be killed and human lives being treated like commodities to be bartered over. It has been estimated that more than a million embryos are frozen in storage in the United States after IVF and that as many as 93% of all embryos created through IVF are eventually destroyed. A 2019 NBC News profile of Florida fertility doctor Craig Sweet acknowledged that his practice has discarded or abandoned approximately a third of the embryos it places in cold storage.
Yet the political lines of the issue were blurred in 2024 after the Alabama Supreme Court ruling. Most national Republicans rushed to declare their support for IVF (with just a handful of exceptions). Leading the charge was President Donald Trump, who cast himself as a “leader on fertilization” and even promised to enact a new federal entitlement to IVF, whether through direct subsidy or insurance mandate (though he also suggested he would support religious exemptions to the latter).
