"TOPEKA, Kansas (LifeSiteNews) — Conservatives are celebrating Republican lawmakers in Kansas who overrode a veto of their state’s Democratic governor in order to uphold parental rights.
By a vote of 87-38 and 31-9 in the state House and Senate, respectively, GOP politicians opted to protect the religious liberty of foster parents and couples who adopt.
HB 231, approved Thursday, bars the Kansas Department for Children and Families from discriminating based on an applicant’s opposition to LGBT ideology. More specifically, it mandates the department be prohibited from the “selection, appointment, or licensure … of a person because of such person’s sincerely held religious or moral beliefs regarding sexual orientation or gender identity or intent to guide or instruct a child consistent with such beliefs.”
Greg Chafuen, senior counsel for the Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom, praised the development in a press release.
“Every child deserves a loving home that can provide them stability and opportunities to grow,” he said. “Other states have put politics over people by excluding caring families and faith-based adoption and foster care organizations from helping children find loving homes.”
While the law still allows the department to take into account an applicant’s beliefs when dealing with a minor who is already confused about their gender, it prohibits the implementation of a full ban.
Democratic Governor Laura Kelly, 75, vetoed the bill Monday but did not provide an explanation on the social media site X, where she has frequently boasted about some of the “bipartisan” bills she has signed.
After previously serving as a Kansas state senator since 2005, Kelly first won the governorship in 2018 with 48 percent of the vote. She was re-elected in 2022 with 49.5 percent. According to The Topeka Capital-Journal, Kelly has vetoed 16 bills during the current legislative session. In 2023 she vetoed 15 bills, the most up until that time over the previous 30 years.
Kansas Republicans vetoed multiple other measures on Thursday as well. 12 News reports that the state Senate overrode five vetoes while the House voted to override eight in total.
“The governor had rejected bills that aimed to limit the authority to prohibit mass gatherings during health emergencies and to establish child support obligations starting at conception,” the outlet states.
Republicans have held a vise grip on the state’s legislature chambers for many years. At present, the GOP has a 31-9 majority in the state Senate and an 88-37 edge in the state House."

"Nicaragua is forcing the nation’s Catholic priests to present themselves at local police stations weekly for questioning and submitting their homilies for review, the online Catholic outlet The Pillar reported on Wednesday.
The regime of communist dictator Daniel Ortega and his wife and “co-president” Rosario Murillo has waged an ongoing, relentless persecution against Nicaragua’s Catholic Church in retaliation for the Church’s support of the 2018 wave of anti-communist protests. Ortega responded to the peaceful protests with a brutal crackdown campaign that left over 300 dead.
Ortega’s persecution of Christianity dramatically escalated in 2022, the same year the communist dictator, a self-professed“Catholic,” declared a “war” against the Vatican, accusing it of using its priests to “stage a coup” against his regime. The escalation has included: the banishment of priests, nuns, and other members of the Church from Nicaragua; the systematic shutdown and forced seizure of Catholic media, universities, and other assets; the banning of Catholic processions; and several other actions.
The Pillar, citing a report recently published by the Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), explained that the Ortega regime imposed “precautionary measures” on the Catholic Church that forced its priests to make weekly, in-person reports at local police offices and to share details of their planned activities. The Catholic priests are forced to present copies of their weekly homilies to the local police to verify that these do not contain anti-regime messages, and they are prohibited from leaving their respective municipalities without government authorization.
All indoor religious activities, CWS’s report described, are subject to “overt and covert” regime surveillance and monitoring. The regime warns the Church’s religious leaders not to speak or pray about specific topics, such as preaching for unity, justice, or praying for imprisoned religious leaders or the general situation as a whole — which can be considered as “criticism of the government and treated as a crime.”
The outlet pointed out that the restrictions specifically affect dioceses with large numbers of exiled priests, such as Matagalpa, which now relies on priests from other dioceses coming in on a weekly basis. The Matagalpa diocese is one of the hardest hit by Ortega’s relentless persecution of Christianity. In 2022, Nicaraguan police conducted a two-week raid of the parish that culminated with the arrest of its bishop, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, and several other members of the Church.
Bishop Álvarez, an outspoken critic of the Ortega regime, was sentenced to 26 years in prison on “treason” charges and stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship, rendering him a stateless person in clear violation of international law. Álvarez spent over 500 days in prison before Ortega banished him to the Vatican in January 2024.
The Pillar reported that the new restrictions follow Álvarez giving an interview to the Catholic television network EWTN in January, one year after his banishment from Nicaragua. The interview drew the ire of the Nicaraguan dictatorial couple, who responded in an unhinged rant in which it accused the Vatican of being a “depraved pedophile” state guilty of “Pharisean mysticism.”
Weeks after the interview, the Ortega regime had the building of the Episcopal Curia of Matagalpa turned into the location of a social security-affiliated company and stole all of the important relics. The regime originally seized the building during the 2022 raid on the parish and kept it under the constant guard of local police, according to statements from the local community.
According to statements from lay people who spoke with the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa in March anonymously, in other dioceses, priests are not required to go to the police station, but instead the police go to the parishes and ask them for a summary of their weekly activities and to ask how many masses are scheduled in that week.
“I asked some priest friends if it is true that they are weekly asking for permission to celebrate mass and they have told me that no, that the Police only comes to ask how many masses are scheduled in the week,” the unnamed layman said, and suggested that the measure aims to keep track of the schedules of the priests to monitor what is said in their sermons, which do not contain social messages or denunciations but focus only on “theologically” explaining the readings of the Mass.
In November, the Ortega regime kidnapped and banished Monsignor Carlos Herrera, Bishop of Jinotega and head of the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua (CEN) after he criticized Jinotega Mayor Leonidas Centeno for disrespecting a Mass he presided over by having the municipality play loud music during the service.
“What the mayor and all the local authorities are doing is sacrilegious… We ask God’s forgiveness for them and for ourselves,” Bishop Herrera said during that Mass.
The Ortega regime responded to Herrera’s remarks by kidnapping him after he attended a meeting with CEN’s other remaining bishops in the capital city of Managua before banishing him to Guatemala. Monsignor Herrera was the third Catholic bishop banished by the Nicaraguan communist regime in 2024 after Álvarez and Monsignor Isidoro del Carmen Mora, Bishop of Siuna, who was banished alongside Bishop Álvarez and 15 priests in January 2024.
“A source close to the Nicaraguan bishops’ conference told The Pillar that an increase in persecution last summer was believed to be a pressure campaign by the government to force exiled bishops to resign their sees in order to be replaced by bishops who were friendly to the government,” the report read. “Similar moves could be attempted again, they warned.”
“Local Church watchers have compared the Nicaraguan situation to China. Many believe Ortega might like to have his own government-approved Catholic Church if the Vatican does not yield to the pressure,” the report continued."

The question begs: why is it that these very bad actors have no fear of being formally excommunicated from the Church for being Commies -- traitors to their country and God almighty??
Could the answer lie in the fact church "leaders" are too closely associated with those evil and wicked folk, or are Communists themselves or no longer hold the Catholic Faith, that is, if they ever did?

It must be over 50 years now, that my now deceased uncle -- a practicing Catholic -- made a remark to me that indicated his support for the so-called "state" of Isreal, believing that that monstrous regime was the victim and deserved our deepest sympathy -- as well as military aid in the form of our most deadly weapons -- and money!

It is reasonable to conclude that their lack of any criticism whatsoever of the Israeli regime in its recent attacks on Gaza, even when the Pope himself has condemned Israel’s violence, and even when the targeting of homes and hospitals is now there for all to see—thank God for the Internet!—is that these misguided Catholics believe that certain human beings or nations are exempt from moral criticism, from the moral law. Now, for an Israeli to defend its nation’s actions “right or wrong” can be chalked up to simple fanatical nationalism, but why would Americans do so, and American Roman Catholics for that matter! I think that behind this disturbing phenomenon is a form of idolatry, an idolatry that can be described as reverse racism.
Racism is evinced when one automatically condemns a person’s or groups’ actions merely because of the racial identity of the person or group while completely prescinding from any evaluation of the moral quality of the actions themselves. However, is not racism revealed also in an a priori and infallible defense ofa person’s or group’s actions? For it is to exempt a particular group of humans from the strictures of the universal moral law, which is to say, to render them divine.
Based upon their relentless defense of the Israeli genocide in Gaza, indeed, of all of Israeli’s acts of terror and violence beginning with the “Nakba,” the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by the pre-Israeli army prior to the Deir Yassin massacre in 1948. The Nakba marked the beginning of the theft of Palestinian land that continues to this day, with the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the inhumane blockade, and the genocide in Gaza. Based upon their assigning all blame for any violence in the Middle East to Muslims alone, to Hamas, Hezbollah, to anti-Semitism, that is, to any other group or ideology rather than Israel and Zionism; it is reasonable to conclude that these Catholics are thinking as racists. To wit, anti-Semite racists immorally condemn the actions of Jewish people regardless of the moral quality of their actions; Catholic racists immorally celebrate, or at least refuse to condemn, their actions, as if they were impeccable. Both are instances of the sin of racism, though the latter includes the sin of idolatry as well.
For these racist and idolatrous Catholics, as long as they are actions conducted in defense or the name of the special race, nation, ideology, or religion, they are never to be criticized, even if they are morally objectionable actions according to Catholic standards. Instead of recognizing this racism in themselves, however, they automatically assign these vices to those who manifestly do not think as racists and idolaters. Such rejecters of racism and idolatry, that is, those relatively few practicing, orthodox Catholics who have remained immune from the brainwashing campaign of the Israeli and American Zionist propaganda machine, those not cowed by threats of being labeled as racists and anti-Semites, are thus branded as anti-Semites and racists—and all discussion and argument ceases.
There can be no other explanation than racist idolatry as far as I can see for this radical moral blindness to what is obvious to any decent person on the planet. As Rene Girard’s pioneering work on the origin and nature of violence has taught us, being an authentic Christian means, almost more than anything else, being on the side of the victim in instances of sacrificial violence. Though Hamas is no innocent victim, for it certainly shares some of the blame in the death of innocent Palestinians by providing the pretext—though not the justification—for Israel’s grossly disproportionate use of force against them, those siding solely with Israel in the Gaza war, and those who refuse in principle to utter one word of condemnation, due to its racial and/or religious identity, of the Israeli regime, or any regime, institution, group, or person, for what are objectively immoral, violent acts, are in principle expressing their perennial loyalty to the victimizers. This is pledging eternal allegiance to anti-Christ."

The move continues a long history of antipathy towards organized religion in the single-party state.

Earlier this year, the Chinese government issued a report boasting about the increased persecution of independent religious groups in 2024.
“China’s public security authorities intensified efforts to dismantle cult organizations in 2024,” reported the Global Times, a state-run media outlet. “They have worked to curb the growth and spread of cult organizations, mitigating potential threats to national political security and maintaining social stability.”
In a statement on the Chinese messaging app and social media platform WeChat, China’s Ministry of Public Security boasted of increased spending on technology and manpower to combat independent religious organizations and stamp out all faiths.
In January Christians were told to prepare for similar assaults on their faith.
As Breitbart News reported, the CCP declared then it is “intent on rooting out every pocket of independent religious thought” and persecutes Christians by shutting down house churches, stripping children from Christian families, and monitoring every detail of Christian citizens’ lives.
China is an officially atheist communist state that claims to tolerate only five legal religions: Catholicism, Protestant Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, and Islam.
All five of these religions are only legal through government-operated institutions, however, that do not actually preach the teachings of the faiths but instead encourage believers to abandon the faith and worship dictator Xi Jinping.
Christianity, the world’s largest religion, is also the most persecuted.
Christians face challenges and dangers in many parts of the world simply because of their faith, with China just one example of the struggles facing those who simply want the freedom to follow Jesus."
