Truly Sick And Disheartening... Pope Leo Names Pro-LGBT ‘Artist’ Who Hosted Obscene Exhibits To Lead Vatican’s Academy For Fine Arts!!!!!!

From lifesitenews.com and written by Andreas Wailzer Mon Sep 8, 2025 - 10:50 am EDT: Pope Leo names pro-LGBT 'artist' who hosted obscene exhibits to lead Vatican's Academy for Fine Arts - LifeSite

"VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Leo XIV has named a female “artist” who published homoerotic and sadomasochistic photographs as the new president of the Pontifical Academy for Fine Arts.

The Vatican announced on Saturday that the pope appointed Roman museum director Cristiana Perrella to the position. The Pontifical Academy for Fine Arts and Letters of the Virtuosi al Pantheon was founded in 1542 by Pope Paul III for the purpose of promoting, studying, and cultivating sacred art and Christian-inspired literature.

Perrella is known as an “expert” in contemporary art. She has been director of the MACRO museum in Rome since March of this year and previously taught “cultural management” at the San Raffaele University in Milan.

Perrella has hosted multiple obscene, pro-LGBT, and sadomasochistic displays in the past. In 2020, she curated an exhibition called “Nudes” featuring 90 photographs by Chinese artist Ren Hang at the Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato, Italy. Most of the photographs showed naked persons, with some of them featuring homoerotic poses. The official exhibition description stated that some of the photos “at times refer to sadomasochism and fetishism.”

In 2019, the Italian artist directed the exhibition “Night Fever: Designing Club Culture 1960–Today.” The display promoted nightclub culture and featured sexualized, pro-LGBT exposés. In an interview with Sleek magazine, she lamented that nightclubs are “increasingly under threat” due to closures. The exhibition also highlighted “queer club culture,” and Perrella stressed the role of nightclubs for the LGBT movement, since clubs “were places where people could be themselves and affirm their identity publically [sic].”

In 2021, Perrella curated an exhibition titled “Cult Fiction,” featuring photographs from Marialba Russo documenting the explicit advertisement posters for pornographic movies that were seen on the streets of Aversa and Naples during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The theme of the exhibition was “sexual liberation.”

Perrella has been a member of the Pontifical Academy for Fine Arts since June 2022, when she was appointed by Pope Francis. Perrella is responsible for the program of the “Conciliazione 5” exhibition space of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See, which was inaugurated for the Holy Year 2025. In the wake of the jubilee, she also curated a site-specific art installation in Rome’s Rebibbia prison, where Pope Francis opened his own Holy Door on December 26, 2024.

Pope Leo has recently met with several prominent heretics, including the infamous Jesuit Father James Martin, the pro-abortion nun Sr. Lucia Caram, and the head of the German Bishops’ Conference, Georg Bätzing. While the Vatican did not signal support for their views, the Holy See also offered no condemnation of their promotion of errors in matters of faith and morals. The appointment of Perrella to her new position adds to the concern of many faithful Catholics that the Holy See is tolerating and even promoting heterodoxy."

Note: Over the weekend, the "Vatican" -- with the approval of Leo -- had a "mass" for the queer "Catholics" in St. Peter's...

(By the way, that news is not a conspiracy theory, but a fact covered by the world's press and Catholic blogosphere media.)

Let that sink in for a while!

Wake up novus ordo, synodal Catholics before it's too late!!

So, you think that the Catholic faith was savagely attacked by Bergoglio during the time he held the Chair of St. Peter hostage, was more than some faithful could take.

You were right...

Now, however, it seems that the madness is continuing, only this time, it is done with smiles and handshakes, instead of being cold and aloof as we were all accustomed to from the now-deceased Francis!

Which is worse, I wonder??

The time for "give him a chance," is long over...

Now it is time to face the spiritual facts of life and call a spade a spade.  As practicing Catholics, we can do no less.

The Reality Of Apostasy: A Deal With The Devil? Silence In The Face Of Error: Pope Leo Meets With ["]Fr.["] James Martin -- But NOT To Call Him To Conversion!

The heterodox "priest" and known heretic, J. Martin, has yet another photo-op with Leo!

From lifesitenews.com and written by John-Henry Westen Thu Sep 4, 2025 - 4:46 pm EDT: Silence in the face of error: Pope Leo meets with Fr. James Martin - LifeSite

This is truly disheartening...

"(LifeSiteNews) — Brothers and sisters, let’s speak plainly.

Imagine Pope Leo welcoming Hugh Hefner, the world’s most infamous pornographer, into the Apostolic Palace. Imagine them smiling for the cameras. Then Hefner walks out and brags: “I was honored to meet the Pope today. He was joyful and encouraging. He welcomed me.” The world would hear one message: “The Pope blesses pornography.”

Or picture Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted for child trafficking, emerging from a papal meeting and declaring: “The Pope was so warm and supportive. I feel affirmed.” Every headline on earth would say: “The Pope embraces traffickers.”

Or suppose Haitham al-Haddad, the radical preacher who defends wife-beating, posed with the Pope and then crowed: “He confirmed my mission.” Would Catholics sit back and say, “Let’s wait and see”? Never.

And finally, imagine David Duke, the notorious white supremacist, boasting after an audience: “The Pope welcomed me, he was serene, joyful, and encouraging.” Every sane person would see the scandal.

Now, some might ask, “But is it fair to compare James Martin to such people?” The answer is yes. Because the sins Martin promotes – chiefly, sodomy and its normalization – are counted in Catholic moral teaching among the sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance. Pornographers, traffickers, wife-beaters, racists – each attacks human dignity. And so too does the public promotion of what God Himself calls abominable. This is why the comparison holds.

READ: Fr. James Martin: Pope Leo will show ‘same openness’ as Pope Francis to ‘LGBTQ Catholics’

My friends, that is exactly what just happened with James Martin, S.J. He met with Pope Leo, he posed for photos, and then he boasted to the world: “I was honored and grateful. The Pope was serene, joyful, and encouraging. He gave me the same message as Pope Francis: ‘Todos, todos, todos’ – openness and welcome.” And the Pope has said nothing to correct it. The dissenters cheer, the headlines roar, and the faithful are left betrayed.

Now let’s be clear: if Pope Leo had met with Martin to call him to conversion, every Catholic would rejoice. We would weep tears of joy. But true conversion is not a smile and a photo-op. True conversion would require a public recantation of his errors, a public apology to the faithful he has misled, and a life of penance for the scandal he has caused. Anything less is not repentance — it is propaganda.

And why does this matter? Because James Martin has openly:

  • Opposed Catholic parents fighting to shield their children from sexualized school curricula.
  • Urged Catholics and parishes to celebrate Pride Month – even tying it to devotion to the Sacred Heart.
  • Praised and performed blessings of same-sex unions.
  • And written books demanding the Church adopt the world’s language and abandon her call to chastity.

This is not pastoral care. This is poison for souls.

And so, when the Holy Father meets him and says nothing, the silence itself becomes scandal. The photo becomes a weapon. The faithful are left confused.

For the sake of souls, for the sake of truth, and for the sake of Christ Himself, we beg: let the truth be spoken clearly. Let no photo-op replace the Gospel."

End of very disturbing, yet undeniably truthful article...

is Anyone Really Surprised? ["]Cardinal["] McElroy Asks Vatican To Laicize Whistleblower Priest Claiming DC Sex Abuse Cover-Up!

"Fr. Michael Briese says ["]Cdl.["] McElroy never refuted his allegations of abuse cover-ups, instead threatening laicization unless he removed blog posts exposing DC clergy scandals."

From lifesitenews.com Cardinal McElroy asks Vatican to laicize whistleblower priest claiming DC sex abuse cover-up - LifeSite and written by AntoninoCambria Wed Sep 3, 2025 - 9:29 am EDT

"(LifeSiteNews) — ["]Cardinal["] Robert McElroy of Washington, D.C., is seeking to laicize Father Michael Briese, a whistleblower archdiocesan priest, for refusing to take down blog posts detailing allegations that two priests who remain in good standing with the archdiocese, Father Adam Park and Father Carter Griffin, had sexually abused seminarians as well as allegations of a cover-up of the allegations by both McElroy and his predecessor, ["]Cardinal["] Wilton Gregory.

In an August 12 letter, McElroy informed Briese that he was requesting his laicization with the Dicastery for the Clergy in response to his supposed “defamatory” claims on his personal Substack against himself, Gregory, the two accused priests, and the archdiocesan curia; however, he notably did not refute any of the charges.

In an exclusive interview with LifeSiteNews, Briese rebutted McElroy’s charge that his claims were defamatory, detailed McElroy’s and Gregory’s alleged years-long cover-up of abuse, the prelate’s efforts to have him silenced, their alleged homosexuality, and more.

McElroy’s letter informing Briese of his impending laicization

In his letter to Briese, McElroy emphasized his hope that, during a July 30 meeting, Briese would agree to take down his “defamatory” articles in exchange for continuing a limited priestly ministry for the poor. However, because the priest refused this offer and continued to push McElroy on his, Cardinal Gregory’s, and the archdiocese’s alleged cover-up of sexual abuse, the cardinal said the laicization process will continue.

“I was particularly hoping that such an avenue might emerge because it would allow you to pursue some initiatives in your own priesthood that would serve the poor, that have been so much at the heart of your service in the Church,” McElroy wrote. “But even as we discussed such an approach, you threatened on two separate occasions in our conversation to bring down the Church and me personally, as well as Cardinal Gregory.”

“For these reasons, I must continue the process that has begun to dismiss you from the clerical state,” he added. “It is inconsistent with your identity as a priest to continue the pattern of character assassination that has wounded so many without justification, and as the pastor of this local church, I cannot stand (by) while you do so.”

Briese stressed to LifeSiteNews that McElroy did not once refute any of the allegations of abuse by the priests or the cover-up by him, Gregory, and the archdiocese.

“(McElroy) hangs himself here because he’s trying to throw everything on me as disobedience. But he never says that I falsely accused (my) archbishop, he doesn’t say it’s a lie,” the priest said. “He’s just not holding himself accountable.”

“I’ve been obedient for seven years. I have followed the orders by Gregory (and McElroy), but I’m not going to pretend that the homosexual promiscuity in our priesthood today is acceptable,” he added.

Alleged DC clerical abuse

In 2021, Father Adam Park, the former vice rector for seminary life at the Pontifical North American College (NAC) in Rome, was accused in a lawsuit by a former seminarian of harassing and preying upon him. Park then quietly stepped down from his position at the NAC but remained in good standing within the archdiocese.

As Briese noted in his August 22 letter to McElroy and on his Substack, a former NAC seminarian came forward and not only corroborated the first seminarian’s story but also alleged that Park had pushed other seminarians to “pleasure him,” once had a “sexual encounter” with a male flight attendant, and has lived as an active homosexual throughout his priesthood.

According to rumors, Park is currently back in Rome pursuing a doctorate in sacred theology, but LifeSiteNews was unable to corroborate this information.

Another former seminarian from the Saint John Paul II Seminary came forward, accusing Father Carter Griffin, then the seminary’s vice rector, among other clergy, of sexually harassing him. Griffin has since been promoted to rector of the seminary.

Griffin had defended himself by stating that “people in my position don’t do things like that,” per a 2019 letter from the seminarian and his family to then-Archbishop Christophe Pierre, detailing the accusations against the priest.

Briese’s letter in response to McElroy

Ten days after McElroy sent his letter, Briese responded with a letter of his own, noting that the cardinal had failed to answer any of his allegations, and underscored that he wasn’t trying to defame anyone but rather was informing the faithful of the serious allegations against two archdiocesan clergy after they failed to act.

“Before I wrote about the sexual allegations … against Father Park, I attempted – on several occasions without success – to discuss them with Cardinal Wilton Gregory,” the priest wrote.  “His refusal to meet with me led me to believe that he was covering up the abuse allegations made against Father Park, as well as abuse allegations (from) the family of former Baltimore seminarian … made against Father Carter Griffin.”

“Because of the plethora of evidence and sworn testimony against Father Park, I would be in violation of the Safe Environment Polices of the Washington Archdiocese and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops if I obeyed you and Cardinal Gregory by covering up and retracting what I reported about Father Park,” he added.

Briese also sent a copy of the letter to Pope Leo XIV through Cardinal Christophe Pierre, allowing the Vatican to decide whether the allegations were unfounded and if the attempted laicization was justified. While the priest stressed to LifeSiteNews that he is not optimistic the Vatican will ultimately side with him, the priest felt it was important that they have a record of his accusations.

["]Cardinals["] Gregory and McElroy’s alleged homosexuality

Briese also discussed how, during his years-long correspondence with Cardinal Gregory about the allegations, he asked the then-Washington archbishop in a letter if perhaps he was covering for these abusive homosexual priests because he himself was a homosexual.

“I asked Gregory a simple yes or no question: Have you ever freely, willingly, knowingly, and deliberately laid down with another consenting homosexual man?”

But Briese never received a response from the archbishop and later posed the same question to his successor, but again didn’t receive a response.

While rumors of Gregory’s and McElroy’s supposed homosexuality over the years have never been confirmed, both prelates are notorious for their pro-LGBT heterodoxy.

Gregory has notably praised and celebrated a Mass for Father James Martin’s heterodox Outreach conference. Earlier this year, during a prayer service for the pro-LGBT dissident Catholic organization Dignity Washington, the cardinal also offered an apology to “LGBTQ Catholics” who he believed had been unjustly hurt by the Church’s teaching on same-sex “marriage.”

While same-sex attraction is not considered sinful in itself, the Catholic Church formally condemns homosexual activity and urges homosexuals to live a chaste lifestyle.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered and “contrary to the natural law.” The text is very clear that homosexual activity can never be approved, and repeats that “(h)omosexual persons are called to chastity.” Homosexual acts are also mortal sins; therefore, anyone who commits these sins and does not repent through the sacrament of confession is in danger of hell.

Like Gregory, McElroy has celebrated multiple pro-LGBT Masses, called for active homosexuals as well as divorced and “remarried” couples to receive Holy Communion, and even expressed support for ordaining same-sex attracted men as priests.

Priests need to speak out against their bishops

Whether or not he is officially laicized, Briese emphasized that he is committed to continuing to fight against prelates who cover up sexual abuse.

“I’m a fighter. And if (McElroy’s) going to destroy my priesthood, he’s going to have to fight me to destroy my priesthood,” he said. “And every time he fights me, I’ll swing right back at him.”

Turning to his fellow priests, Briese stressed that they need to have the courage to speak out against bishops whom they know are concealing abuse.

“All of us as ordained men need to step back and ask ourselves the same question: Why did I become a Catholic priest? To build up the kingdom of God or to hide behind its walls and carry myself in such ways that are both illegal and immoral?” he asked.

“If your cardinal or bishop is writing to you, threatening to remove you, put his letter to you up on Substack. Don’t sit there quietly, taking your undeserved beating from your bishop and being unjustly removed from (the) priesthood or punched in some way because the public deserves the truth.”

The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., did not respond to LifeSiteNews’ request for comment by publication time."

Democrat Females Stunning Disconnect From Reality (God Almighty And The Natural Law): Praise Abortion Giant Planned Parenthood For ‘Life-Saving Care’!

It's the usual suspects including the self-described "devout Catholic" -- the evil and wicked N. Pelosi...

Remember the photo-op Pelosi had with Bergoglio?

Remember that Bergoglio praised Pelosi (and Biden!) for being what they are, the way they are, read: radical supporters of pro-abortion, pro-homosexuality, and pro-bodily mutilation (LGBTIQQ), etc?

Both are, of course, apostate Catholics, automatically excommunicated from the real Catholic Church for defending the massive, in-your-face culture of death on so many levels...

Yet these miscreants continue to receive Our Lord, piling sacrilege upon sacrilege, upon sacrilege to their immortal souls!

Francis failed miserably in his charism, not admonishing these bad actors, but instead continued to encourage them, similar to his encouragement of the heretic and pro-homosexual J. Martin, also automatically excommunicated from the real Catholic Church!

Unbelievably, now Leo continues to cozy up to Martin and other heretics, even promoting them to high and influential offices within the curia, following Bergoglio in creating a "new synodal church" -- their words, not mine.

But I digress...

Here is an article from breitbart.com and written by Katherine Hamilton 5 Sep 2025: Dem Congresswomen Praise Planned Parenthood for ‘Life-Saving Care'

"A pack of Democrat congresswomen praised Planned Parenthood for its “life-saving care,” on Wednesday, as the abortion giant fights the Trump administration in court to keep its coffers full of taxpayer dollars, and dozens of clinics face closure.

The Democratic Women’s Caucus and the Reproductive Freedom Caucus posted a video to X of more than dozen Democrat congresswomen lauding the organization— many of whom have received thousands of dollars in donations from Planned Parenthood’s separate political advocacy arm.

“We thank you for saving women’s lives,” Rep. Rose DeLauro (D-CT) said.

“For always showing up every day,” Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA) continued.

“For providing healthcare to people who need it no matter what,” Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) added.
“For being there when people need help,” Rep. Janelle Bynum (R-OR) said.

“Without Planned Parenthood, women across our country would not have access to reproductive health care and life-saving care,” Rep. Julia Brownley (D-CA) claimed.

“And it doesn’t have to be just about abortion services. You provide women’s health care,” Rep. Andrew Salinas (D-OR) said.

“Those all-important health screenings, access to birth control, cancer screenings,” Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) said.
“You are a lifeline for our community,” Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) continued.

“You have provided comfort. You have provided security. You have provided a good listener to the thousands and thousands of women who have come across your doors,” Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX)  said.

“Every patient you help is a defiant act of love, compassion, and justice.” Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-NM) claimed.

“Thank you for everything that you do. You’ve got supporters from coast to coast,” Rep. Deborah Ross (D-NC) concluded.

The video included appearances from Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ), Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), and Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY).

The lawmakers made no mention of the more than 400,000 unborn babies Planned Parenthood aborted in 2023-2024, per the organization’s most recent annual report."

Democrats (The Merchants Of Death) Are Mad Trump Doesn’t Want VA Clinics To Kill Babies In Abortions!!

I have said these many times before: the Democrat party are the merchants and dealers of death. They hate life and the right to that precious life, all in the name of the "rights" of women to kill their pre-born babies, with little or no restrictions -- in some cases, all the way up to when the baby is about to be delivered!

The very idea of a pro-life Democrat is almost unheard of in these times of confusion and apostasy -- with "Catholic" Democrats being automatically excommunicated for supporting legislation that leads to the killing spree up until Roe v Wade was overturned. Even then, however, over 1,000,000 babies are slaughtered in the womb -- or without -- every year in the land of the free and the home of the brave!

You see, it is not just "planned parenthood" that kills babies, it is all the other entities that also take part in the genocide of the pre-born -- with the help of taxpayer dollars to the tune of about $500,000,000 a year going to "pp"!!!!

I use the word genocide because many women in the minority community are targeted for the killing of their pre-born! That's right, the mad woman-life-hater, Margaret Sanger, specifically wanted to eliminate the black race from the face of the earth! One of her plans to accomplish her fiendish end was to enlist black "pastors" and other black "leaders" to sign on to this anti-life agenda -- yes, that's right, get blacks to kill blacks!

So how can it be that blacks are so in favor of killing their own race?

Good question...

Perhaps some -- not all -- have sold their souls to the demon for power and position in this life and to hell with the consequences in the next...

Let that sink in for a while!!

                                                 ******

Under President Trump, that funding spicket is slowly being turned off and the sooner the better for those unable to speak or defend themselves...

But under the apostate, traitor, baby-killer-in-charge, Biden, and his Marxist cronies, established a rule that allowed female veterans or wives of vets to kill their babies at VA clinics!

That is now over, thank God!

But the Demonrats are howling from the housetops!

Get this from lifenews.com and written by Raimundo Rojas | Sep 4, 2025 | 5:27PM | Washington, DC: Democrats are Mad Trump Doesn’t Want VA Clinics to Kill Babies in Abortions - LifeNews.com

"Democratic lawmakers held a press conference this week to protest a proposed Trump administration rule that would reinstate long-standing protections for mothers and their unborn babies at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Their public statements were filled with inaccurate claims, exaggerated, sometimes hysterical rhetoric, and a complete disregard for what the rule does.

Representative Mark Takano, who opened up the show, claimed the rule would “put veterans’ lives at risk” and “strip essential healthcare” from women. This is an irresponsible and unfounded assertion. The rule in question would restore a decades-long policy that forbade abortion through the VA, with exceptions for rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk.

To suggest that this is somehow dangerous or extreme requires ignoring both the history of the VA and the contents of the proposal itself. Restoring these protections does not remove emergency care. It removes elective abortion, which has never been recognized as a legitimate function of the VA healthcare system.

We then heard from Senator Richard Blumenthal, you know, the guy who falsely claimed he’d served in Vietnam when he actually never left the country during his tenure in the National Guard. Well, he feverishly warned that the rule would cause “chaos and confusion” for providers.

This claim is difficult to understand because the policy being reinstated is the same one that guided the VA for over twenty years without incident. What was confusing was the Biden administration’s abrupt decision in 2022 to inject abortion into VA policy. That action disrupted long-standing norms and ignored the legal and ethical boundaries respected by previous administrations. The Trump proposal corrects Biden’s overreach and reaffirms that abortion is not healthcare.

Representative Julia Brownley went so far as to call the proposal “cruel and dangerous,” and spoke of introducing legislation to enshrine abortion access permanently within the VA. Her response ignores the basic fact that the VA was never created to facilitate abortions. Her legislation would transform veterans’ healthcare into a vehicle for abortion access, regardless of what the law, public opinion, or conscience rights might require.

This is not a serious healthcare proposal. It is a political maneuver designed to entrench abortion as a government-backed service, paid for by taxpayers and shielded from scrutiny.

The most alarming claim came from Kai Hunter, who stated, “Women are going to die” because of the Trump rule. This kind of rhetoric is not only inaccurate but also irresponsible. The proposed rule does not remove life-saving care. It maintains apparent exceptions for the life of the mother. Suggesting otherwise is dishonest and designed to provoke fear rather than inform public discussion. Emergency medical treatment will remain available, just as it always has.

The truth is simple. This rule reinstates a clear, principled policy that prevents the VA from performing or promoting elective abortions. It respects the conscience rights of medical providers and state laws. It respects taxpayers who do not want their money used to end the lives of unborn children. And most importantly, it reflects the VA’s primary mission: providing actual medical care to those who served.

The pro-abortion outrage on display this week ignored these facts entirely. Instead, the press conference promoted the idea that abortion must be treated as standard medical care, without restriction, even within a federal health system. That is not the view of most Americans. It is not grounded in medical necessity, and it is a political position that treats abortion as a right above all others.

Veterans deserve medical care that honors their service and respects life. The VA was never intended to be turned into a political tool for the abortion industry, and this rule ensures that it will not be."

Little Sisters Of The Poor Still Fighting The Obamacare Abortion Mandate!!!

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, I posted this: The Demonic Attack Against The Little Sisters Of The Poor Continues By Rogue, Anti-Natural Law "Judge"!

And it continues...

From lifenews.com: "If anyone ever had a reason to say that, it would be the Little Sisters of the Poor. Free exercise of religion may be a fundamental right in America, but they’ve been fighting for theirs for more than a dozen years—and counting."

Little Sisters of the Poor Still Fighting the Obamacare Abortion Mandate - LifeNews.com and written by Thomas Jipping | Sep 3, 2025 | 8:41AM | Washington, DC

Stunning, isn't it, how the evil forces of anti-Christ never give up their attempt to snuff out the precious gift of life that our Creator has given us and the ability to bring new life into the world, to know and serve Him in this life, and be happy will Him in Heaven forever?!

"They say that no good deed goes unpunished. There’s even a song called “No Good Deed” in a hit Broadway musical.

If anyone ever had a reason to say that, it would be the Little Sisters of the Poor. Free exercise of religion may be a fundamental right in America, but they’ve been fighting for theirs for more than a dozen years—and counting.

Founded in 1839 by Jeanne Jugan, whom Pope Benedict XVI canonized in 2006, the Little Sisters serve the elderly poor all over the world. In addition to chastity, poverty, and obedience, the Little Sisters vow hospitality, and their work includes operating homes for the elderly in nearly a dozen countries, including the U.S.

Then came Obamacare. Signed into law in March 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required that employers provide group health insurance plans with “minimum essential coverage,” including “preventive care.” By regulation, the Department of Health and Human Services said this includes not only contraceptives, which prevent pregnancy, but also abortifacients, which terminate it. The Obama administration threatened massive fines for noncompliance with this part of its “reproductive freedom” agenda.

The administration employed several strategies to further push this on society.

First, birth control coverage was to be free to employees; employers had to bear the full cost.

Second, to shield its agenda, the Obama administration imposed the birth control mandate without going through the normal process of notifying the public and inviting comment.

Third, it adopted a religious exemption not even worthy of the name. That exemption applied only to a narrow category of churches and the “exclusively religious activities of any religious order.” If any other religious employer sought to avoid the mandate, they had to certify the religious nature of their work and their objection to the mandate.

Religious freedom in America has always meant far more than going to church—so religious employers soon began challenging the birth control mandate. First up were employers who wished to operate their companies according to religious principles.

In Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, the Supreme Court in 2014 held that the mandate violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which requires the federal government to have a “compelling” reason to substantially burden religious exercise, and says it may do so no more than necessary.

Educational institutions and religious nonprofits—including the Little Sisters—and educational institutions also challenged the birth control mandate. While the certification process allowed them to avoid the mandate itself, they argued, it still violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act by making them complicit in facilitating birth control and abortion. The Supreme Court consolidated seven of these lawsuits but, in Zubik v. Burwell, postponed a decision on the merits, giving the Obama administration another chance to craft an appropriate religious exemption.

In May 2017, President Donald Trump issued an executive order calling for new regulations “to address conscience-based objections to the preventive-care mandate.” In November 2018, HHS finalized rules extending the automatic exemption beyond churches to employers who objected based on sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions.

Religious employers had challenged Obamacare because the religious exemption was too narrow. But following HHS’ changes, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, later joined by New Jersey, sued to get rid of the religious exemption altogether, making both procedural and substantive arguments.

Procedurally, they said that the Obamacare statute did not authorize making any religious exemption and that HHS had unlawfully sidestepped the normal rulemaking process. Substantively, the states argued that the broader religious exemption was “arbitrary and capricious,” violating a legal standard for all agency rulemaking imposed by the Administrative Procedure Act.

The Little Sisters stepped into this litigation to defend the exemption, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit ruled against them on both sets of issues.

Both the Trump administration and the Little Sisters appealed and in Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court in 2020 reversed the 3rd Circuit’s procedural ruling but did not address substance.

The court held that the “plain language of the statute clearly allows the Departments to create the preventive care standards as well as the religious and moral exemptions … . We further hold that the rules promulgating these exemptions are free from procedural defects.”

On Aug. 13, 2025, after an inexplicable five years, a U.S. district judge in Pennsylvania issued a nationwide injunction against enforcing the religious exemption, concluding that it violated the APA.

Now, following that decision, the Little Sisters may once again be headed to the Supreme Court.

All the Little Sisters of the Poor want to do is serve the elderly with kindness and dignity. If the Obama administration had even minimal regard for religious freedom, it would not have tried to force nuns to pay for birth control. And if states had any such regard, they would not be trying to make birth control and abortion crush religious freedom. But that’s where we are in America today.

The Little Sisters show us what it means to fully, and humbly, commit to their faith. And by insisting that the government honor what’s supposed to be an inalienable right to practice that faith, they defend not just their freedom, but ours as well."
