"(LifeSiteNews) — Priests for Life Canada is encouraging Canadians to share a video from a Canadian pro-freedom and religion advocacy group that shows the overwhelming societal harms caused by decades of abortion in Canada.

“Priests For Life Canada encourages you to watch this video from 4MyCanada which highlights the societal impact of abortion on our country since 1969,” the group noted in a recent X post.

The video, released by 4MyCanada on its YouTube channel, is titled “Just the Facts -Did Canada Commit Suicide by Abortion? Birth Rate Dips Below Extinction Rate.”

“Abortion was not good for Canada. It’s killing us,” says the narrator in the video, going on to add that the reality is, it is one of the “most uncomfortable issues in our national conversation.”

“Many Canadians hold deeply held pro-life convictions because of our faith. Others don’t. So rather than debating the procedure itself, the impacts on women and families, or the moral positions surrounding it, let’s simply look at the facts and the math.”

The video noted that since abortion became legal in Canada in 1969, “Canada has no nationwide criminal law restricting abortion at any stage of pregnancy.”

“We are the only Western nation with no laws on abortion. Based on Government of Canada statistics, an estimated 4.8 million abortions have taken place since legalization. However, statisticians widely acknowledge that these figures are incomplete.”

Abortion was decriminalized in Canada in 1969 when then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (Justin Trudeau’s father) passed a heavily criticized omnibus bill that amended the Criminal Code to allow abortions to be done in hospitals under permissive circumstances.

This law remained in effect until the Supreme Court of Canada struck it down and labeled it unconstitutional in the 1988 Morgentaler decision. The law was removed on a technicality, with the court ruling that it violated a woman’s right to “security of the person” because it could not be applied equally across the country.

After the decision was issued, the court encouraged Parliament to produce replacement abortion legislation. This effort failed when then-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s draft law was dismissed in a Senate tie vote on May 30, 1990, as referenced in Wilkinson’s video. The law, known as Bill C-43 (An Act respecting abortion), satisfied “neither pro-life nor abortion advocates,” according to Campaign Life Coalition.

At least 6.13 million Canadians are ‘missing from our population today because of abortion’

The video by 4MyCanada noted that, as abortion clinics are not “required to report their data,” as it is “voluntary,” the true number of deaths from the procedure is more. “National totals do not include abortions carried out using the abortion pill.”

“When we examine Canadian demographic trends over the past 5 1/2 decades, a clear picture emerges of the impact. Many of the children aborted in those early decades would now be parents and some even grandparents,” the narrator stated in the video.

Broken down, this means that when one considers “lost children and grandchildren” and using “conservative demographic modeling,” it’s estimated that more “than 6.13 million Canadians are missing from our population today because of abortion.”

“This figure is almost certainly understated,” the group noted.

The video observed that if these Canadians had been allowed to be born, they would have represented a minimum of “nine percent of today’s Canadian workforce, or approximately 2.1 million workers.”

“That workforce would include an estimated 840 surgeons, 3,800 lawyers, 5,000 pastors and ministers, more than 5,000 inventors and innovators, 6,300 doctors, 21,000 engineers, 24,000 law enforcement professionals, more than 31,000 agricultural workers, nearly 40,000 registered nurses, almost 59,000 teachers, and well over 200,000 skilled tradespeople, 231,000 entrepreneurs,” the video explained.

The video narrator for 4MyCanada noted that these numbers are not just “statistics” but represent people who “could have helped meet many of Canada’s growing labour shortages and populations’ health care and security needs.”

“For decades, governments have attempted to offset demographic decline through immigration. Immigration is valuable and has contributed greatly to Canada, but from a demographic standpoint, it cannot fully replace the population structure lost through abortion,” the video stated.

According to 4MyCanada, if 100,000 babies are not born in “a given year, replenishing that exact age group would require 100,000 babies to immigrate, not adults.”

“When families immigrate, they naturally arrive with parents and relatives of different ages, changing the demographic structure rather than replenishing it. The demographic which is lost no longer exists to undergird the aging population. The mathematics simply are not identical,” the group said.

When it comes to lost revenue in taxes, the group estimates that the total “federal tax revenue not collected because of the aborted Canadians totaled approximately $1.3 trillion at the end of 2024.”

“Ironically, Canada’s federal debt at March 31, 2024, stood at approximately $1.236 trillion,” the group highlighted in the video.

The video also raised concerns about Canada’s low birth rate. As reported by LifeSiteNews, it has plunged to an all-time low for the second year in a row and shows no signs of improving anytime soon.

According to Statistics Canada’s latest births and still births data from 2024, the nation’s official fertility rate is 1.25 children per woman, lower than in 2023, which was 1.26 children per woman.

“What kind of financial burden are we leaving to our children and to our grandchildren? But the issue extends beyond economics. A healthy civilization requires a birth rate of approximately 2.1 children per woman simply to replace itself,” the video asked.

“Before abortion was legalized, Canada’s fertility rate was well above replacement. Within a few years after that, it had fallen below the replacement rate of 2.1. Apart from a modest recovery during the years when more family-supportive public policies were in place, the long-term trend has continued downward. In 2019, the abortion pill became publicly funded across every province and territory, expanding access nationwide.”

After being legalized in 2016 by the government of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, euthanasia in Canada has become rampant and commonplace.

Likewise, current Prime Minister Mark Carney has worked to expand euthanasia 13-fold since it was legalized in 2016. Canada now has the fastest-growing assisted suicide program in the world. Meanwhile, Health Canada has released a series of studies on advanced requests for assisted suicide."

"(LifeSiteNews) — This Saturday, July 18, marks the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, an upheaval that attracted 35,000 volunteer soldiers from 52 different countries to Spain to fight for what they were told was perhaps the last remaining democracy in a Europe where freedom was dying out.

Yet since the end of the war in 1939, relatively little has been said outside of Spain about those events once at the center of the world’s stage. What little memory there is left of those years in the collective mind is dominated by the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, who was embedded, as a journalist, in the defeated International Brigades. This may explain why, as noted by historian Eric Hobsbawm, the Spanish Civil War is one of the few events whose history has not been written by the victors but by the vanquished, i.e. these very brigades, composed of Marxists, socialists and anarchists who, when they left Spain, fell silent about the butchery they had witnessed (with the notable exception of George Orwell).

In preparation for the Grand Jubilee of the year 2000, ["St."] John Paul II designated an International Theological Commission to single out all possible faults of the past for which the Catholic Church should repent in order to start the third Millennium with a clean slate. The Commission had intended to include among them the Church’s role in the events of the Spanish Civil War, but Spain’s episcopate refused to do so, pointing out that the Catholic Church had been among its victims. The international press left it at that, but the Church has quietly been writing its own history by simply beatifying and canonizing thousands of Spanish bishops, priests, nuns, seminarians and Catholic laity as martyrs of the faith in the 1930s. As recently as last May, Pope Leo XIV signed off on another 80 martyrs, bringing the total number of Spanish martyrs recognized by the Catholic Church to a colossal 2,334. However, this is far behind the totals referred to by historians by about two-thirds.

Yet there is still a sort of unspoken gag rule about the events in 1930s Spain, which the bishops made every effort to lift, particularly with the collective letter addressed to their fellow Catholics in the world at large on July 1, 1937, a year after the uprising. Signed by almost all of the bishops still living in their dioceses at the time, and approved by Rome, the letter is a plea for help in getting the truth out to the world, a truth that may be of help in sorting out some of the otherwise inexplicable events of today as well.

Echoing the words of Pius XI’s Divini Redemptoris, which described communism as “intrinsically perverse,” the Spanish bishops tell a story entirely different from those handed down by the mainstream. The main thrust of the letter is what one hardly ever reads anywhere, and certainly not in school books: an indictment of the stealthy communist penetration into the public arena, heavily financed by the U.S.S.R. for years before the Nationalists ever reacted by seeking help from the dictators of Italy and Germany.

“On July 18, 1936, the military revolt took place,” wrote the bishops, “and the war which is still ongoing broke out. But be it noted, first, that the military revolt was not produced, from its beginnings, without the collaboration of the sound element among the people, which joined the Movement in great numbers, and it can therefore be qualified as a civic-military movement.”

This was because the massacres did not begin in 1936, as a result of the conflict between, on the one hand, the left-wing parties that had “won” the elections and, on the other hand, their nationalist opponents — but much earlier, out of an unprecedentedly brutal religious persecution carried out by well-trained communists, anarchists and socialists, who were determined to wipe out the Catholic Church in its entirety.

Elected to office in 1931, the leftist factions, under the common name of republicans, once having done away with the monarchy, immediately created a climate of anti-Catholic hatred which culminated in the burning down of churches and the cold-blooded murder of countless priests, bishops, nuns, seminarians and laity.

The evidence they left behind is abundant. Not only was there no attempt to conceal it, there was not even a way of failing to see it: the rojos displayed their cynical brutality to the point of exhibiting the corpses they dug up in the cemeteries they desecrated, aiming to demonstrate that even religious people die and stay dead.

In those years, the left worked on corroding social relationships, emptying out the economy, weakening the police forces, and then filling the void with ideas meant to support and perpetuate the revolution.

The bishops wrote that the “political regime of democratic freedom was unsettled through arbitrary actions on the part of the authorities, of the State and through government connivance, which overrode the will of the people,” up to the point when, “at the parliamentary elections of February 1936, despite a majority of more than half a million votes over the Left, the Right had 118 fewer deputies than the Popular Front, because the votes of entire provinces had been canceled at will, thus corrupting at its source the legitimacy of Parliament.”

At the same time: “(A)nother powerful people, Russia, was combining with the communists of Spain, by means of the theatre and the cinema, through the introduction of foreign ways and customs, through intellectual trickery and material bribery, and preparing the people’s spirit for the breaking out of a revolution which could be predicted with almost exact precision.”

In particular, “on the 27th of February 1936, immediately after the triumph of the Popular Front, Russia’s Komintern decreed the outbreak of the Spanish rebellion and funded it with extraordinary sums of money. On the 1st of May hundreds of young people in Madrid publicly amassed “bombs and guns, powder and dynamite for the coming revolution.” On the 16th of that same month, there was a meeting between the envoys from the U.S.S.R. with the Spanish delegates from the Third International at the “People’s House” in Valencia, where it was determined, in the ninth of their agreements, to entrust No. 25 of the Madrid “Radios” Committees, together with the policemen on duty, with the task of the elimination of the political and military personages destined to play an important role in the counter-revolution. Meanwhile, from Madrid to the remotest of the villages, the revolutionary militias were receiving military training and were so abundantly armed that, when the war began, they numbered 150,000 shock troops and 100,000 reserves.

To prove their contention that “the massacre of people and things by the communist revolution was premeditated,” the bishops also specified that “79 specialized agitators had arrived from Russia shortly before the uprising. In those very same days the National Commission of Marxist Unification ordered revolutionary militias to be set up in every country. The destruction of the churches, or at least of their furniture, was systematic and in set sequence. In a matter of a month all of the churches had been rendered of no use for public worship.”

The unequivocal proof that such an immense devastation was premeditated “are the terrifying numbers. Although the estimates are not final as of yet, we can safely say that about 20,000 churches have been destroyed or totally ransacked. The priests who have been put to death, even just limiting the count to the secular clergy, amount to about six thousand. They even set the dogs on them, hunting them down all the way up into the mountains; they were hunted down savagely into every possible hiding place. Most of the times they were killed without any trial, with no charges held against them except for their very social mission.”

“Many had their limbs cut off, or were mutilated before being killed; they had their eyes gouged out, their tongue cut off, or they were shot at from a dominant position, others were burned or buried alive, or hacked to death with an axe. The utmost ferocity was used against the ministers of God. Women were violated, showing no respect even for the ones who had consecrated themselves to God. Tombs and cemeteries were desecrated. This work of destruction was carried out with the battle cry ‘Long live Russia!’, under the banner of international communism…”

To those who claimed that if only Francisco Franco had refrained from leading the uprising, the thousands upon thousands of religious clergy and laity would not have died but could have continued their service to the church, the bishops’ reply is that “the truth is exactly the opposite: the detailed plan aiming to carry out a Marxist revolution, which would have broken out all over the world if it hadn’t been prevented in a large measure by the military-civic movement, was preordained for the following purposes: to exterminate the Catholic Clergy and the most qualified Catholic right-wing men, to sovietize all the industries and to install communism.” This was also openly admitted to on the radio, in January of that year, by one of the leaders of the anarchists: “We must tell it the way it is; the armed forces preceded us in order to prevent us from succeeding in unleashing the revolution.”

The worldwide disinformation campaign, financed directly by Moscow, used the classical subversion technique of the left: blaming the tragedy on the victim, i.e. placing the Catholic Church in the defendant’s docket, so that, after having completely destroyed her material presence, they might succeed in annihilating her reputation as well.

Hence among the mistakes to be rectified are also slanders directly aimed at the Church. For example: “The Church has been accused of defending itself against a people’s movement, transforming her churches into fortresses, and thus leading to the massacre of clergy and the ruin of the churches. We deny this. The attack on the churches was sudden, almost simultaneous in all regions, and coincided with the butchery of priests. The churches were burned because they were the houses of God and the clergy were sacrificed because they were the Ministers of God.”

Besides, “We are asked from abroad to say whether it is true that the Church in Spain owned one-third of the national territory and that the people have revolted in order to free themselves from her oppression. The Church did not possess more than a few and insignificant portions of land, presbyteries and schools, and even of this the State had recently taken possession. All that the Church possesses in Spain would not cover a quarter of her needs, and is devoted to the most sacred obligations.”'

"(LifeSiteNews) — Texans can rest assured that Pope Leo XIV is leading the Catholic Church with compassion, resolve, and deliberate clarity, according to Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Archbishop Emeritus of Galveston-Houston.

Catholics may recall that Cardinal DiNardo was responsible for announcing in 2023 the removal of Bishop Joseph Strickland by Pope Francis after an apostolic visitation determined it was “not feasible” for Strickland to remain as bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas.

Three years later, after DiNardo’s participation in the second extraordinary consistory of 2026 convened by Pope Leo XIV on June 26-27 in Rome, the cardinal offered strong reassurance to the faithful in Texas. “I think Texans can be completely assured that Pope Leo is governing the Church very, very well with kindness, but with decisiveness when it’s necessary,” he stated.

The gathering drew 178 cardinals from six continents for two days of discussion and consultation. Cardinals met in language-based groups to address pressing issues, including “synodality” and the pope’s recent encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. Participants reported back to the full assembly, fostering what DiNardo described as “good dialogue.”

“The point of the consistory, I think, is the pope wants to hear from all the cardinals,” DiNardo explained. “The College of Cardinals now is drawn from all over the world … so that you get quite a point of view.” His own English-language group included leaders from Canada, Nigeria, India, and elsewhere.

Cardinal DiNardo highlighted Pope Leo’s leadership style as measured and purposeful. “He’s a canonist, so I think you’ll see in Pope Leo everything is done with a great sense of purpose. He’s not flashy. Everything is done very clearly.” The pope listened attentively, taking personal notes during sessions.

He remains focused on reviewing the Roman Curia and advancing synodality discussions. DiNardo emphasized that Texas Catholics’ perspectives reach the highest levels through representation in the College of Cardinals. “Insofar as one of the cardinals from Texas, our particular point of view always gets into the consistory.”

During the consistory, DiNardo spoke privately with the pope about the Diocese of Amarillo, where he serves as apostolic administrator while awaiting a new bishop. He described Pope Leo as “very American” in his approachable manner, blending warmth with resolve.

Bishop Strickland: Leo’s encyclical ‘obscures the primacy of God’

Yet another bishop from Texas has expressed an “unease” with some of the “broader theological shift” represented in Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical that was a focal point of discussion during the consistory.

In May, Bishop Joseph Strickland, former ordinary of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, expressed concerns that Magnifica Humanitas “risks placing man at the center in a way that obscures the primacy of God.”

The language of the new papal letter “centers on human flourishing, human vulnerability, human solidarity, human fraternity, human communion, human relationships, human participation, and the preservation of humanity itself,” Strickland wrote at the time.

“The repeated emphasis creates the impression that the primary crisis of the modern world is ‘dehumanization,’ rather than sin against God,” the bishop said. “Evil is often described in terms of fragmentation, domination, exclusion, technological reductionism, or broken relationships, rather than rebellion against divine law and the need for repentance and conversion.”

Cardinal Müller: Synodality a ‘hostile takeover’ of the Church

With regard to “synodality,” Cardinal Gerhard Müller ripped this concept in 2022 under the pontificate of Francis calling this synodal process a “hostile takeover” of the Church that threatens to “end” Catholicism.

“This is a system of self-revelation and is the occupation of the Catholic Church” and “the hostile takeover of the Church of Jesus Christ, which is a column of the revealed truth,” Cardinal Müller told EWTN host Raymond Arroyo at the time. “This has nothing to do with Jesus Christ, with the Triune God, and they think doctrine is only like a program of a political party who can change it according to their voters.”

Yet in his first address after his election on May 8, 2025, Pope Leo affirmed “we want to be a synodal Church,” and in May, Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Germany celebrated that Pope Leo XIV “stands in clear continuity with Pope Francis.”

Pope Leo’s appointments promote heterodox views

Concerning the appointment of bishops, the Church has always confirmed the bishop’s solemn duty to safeguard the deposit of faith that it may be handed down to successive generations in all its integrity and vitality.

Expressing as much, Pope St. Pius X quoted the great reformer after the Council of Trent, St. Charles Borromeo, affirming “the Bishop must be eternally on guard and continually vigilant in preventing the contagious disease of heresy from entering among his flock.” And should such a tragedy occur, “he must use every means at his command to expel it immediately.”

Echoing this duty, the Second Vatican Council affirms that among the “principal duties of bishops” is “vigilantly warding off any errors that threaten their flock.” And Pope St. John Paul II also reminded a group of American bishops in 1982 of their vital role in maintaining the “faithful custody of the deposit of faith” and their “duty to defend the word of God against whatever would compromise its purity and integrity.”

Yet, after only 14 months in the Chair of Peter, Pope Leo XIV has appointed bishops who reject the Church’s teaching on sexuality, support the blessing of same sex “couples,” and impossibilities such as “women’s ordination,” attend Masonic Lodge opening ceremonies, and more.

With regard to the consistory, Cardinal DiNardo maintained that “the meetings were excellent,” stating they addressed “some general themes and the pope will deal with them.”

He also told the Texas Catholic Herald that his trip to Rome was “ultimately for the good of Catholics everywhere, including those in Texas.”'

For many years, faithful Catholics have endured a disturbing pro-LGBT turn in many of their churches. But lately, in some places, that has gone completely overboard. And many Catholics have had enough of it.

The Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego is the most “LGBTQ+” area in town. One would hope that the most prominent Catholic Church there, St. John the Evangelist, would be a beacon of light and truth on that issue. But sadly, it has gone in the other direction.

Throughout San Diego County, July 11-19 has been designated as “San Diego Pride Week” by the various LGBT organizations – with the Hillcrest neighborhood being the center of activities. As part of that, the St. John the Evangelist Church advertised that it would have an LGBT-themed “All Are Welcome Mass” on Sunday, July 12.

When our MassResistance Catholic leaders in San Diego saw that promotion, they contacted us. They wanted to do something to confront this outrage and let everyone know that there are Catholics standing up to it!

We got right to work with them. At the very least, a strong protest was in order. They also wanted to document what happened inside during that blasphemous Mass. Over the next several days they contacted other local Catholic activists.

Catholics confront the blasphemy

On July 12, our protesters gathered across the street from the church entrance. So the theological tension surrounding the event was evident even before entering the church! The protesters held a Rosary prayer vigil. They held a large banner depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus and signs reading “God’s Marriage = 1 Man + 1 Woman” and “Go, and sin no more” (the latter echoing Jesus’s scriptural words to the woman caught in adultery).

 Across the street from the church entrance Catholic demonstrators prayed the Rosary and sent a strong message.

The vigil drew sharp, hostile reactions from the surrounding Hillcrest traffic. The demonstrators  received numerous obscene gestures, horn blasts, and profane shouts from car windows – much worse than at vigils outside abortion clinics, one of the demonstrators told us.

Inside the church – worse than imagined

Upon entering the church, one immediately noticed the extensive array of LGBT symbols, decorations, and banners everywhere – on the walls, doors, and pews. They were a vivid contrast to the traditional sacred church architecture.

Toward the front, several rows of pews were specifically reserved for representatives of regional parish "LGBTQ ministries," each with rainbow ribbons affixed. In the sanctuary, the visual theme extended to large rainbow flower bouquets and ribbon adornments surrounding the altar space. Even the candles flanking the tabernacle were fitted with decorative collars matching the colors of the pride flag, and a single rainbow ribbon was tied to the parish collection box.

As the Mass was about to begin, representatives from several Catholic churches across the region marched down the center aisle carrying their respective parish LGBTQ ministry banners.

Catholic priests and deacons from across the region participated. Some clerics wore rainbow-patterned stoles over their liturgical vestments. A special pro-LGBT welcome from the Bishop of San Diego was read aloud to the congregation.

While the structural layout of the readings reflected the universal Catholic calendar, the liturgy incorporated a specific scriptural substitution. The universally slated responsorial Psalm for the day (Psalm 65) was replaced with Psalm 139, with the congregation singing the refrain, "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

The petitions explicitly prayed for the LGBT community, transgender individuals, parents of LGBTQ children – as well as refugees, the homeless, the marginalized, and those struggling with mental illness or addiction.

Final thoughts

It’s clear that the local Hillcrest neighborhood residents – and those who attended the Mass that day – got our protesters’ message. Our activists prayed the Rosary, but their signs were bold and hard-hitting (and spoke the truth). It shows how important it is in these situations not to just stand there and be polite.

As we’ve been saying, even if you feel outnumbered, it’s necessary to do at least something!"
